Censorship in Education is the subject of the evening's discussion, which will take place at the Acorn Cafe inside Oakville town hall. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. "This topic was chosen because of the conflicting decisions by two neighbouring school boards to censor writings by the atheist author," said Kevin Saldanha, an executive member of the group. While the Halton Catholic board banned the book, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board decided to leave it on its library shelves. However, the book will carry a disclaimer stating that "representations of the church in this novel are purely fictional" and not reflective of the real Roman Catholic Church. The Golden Compass is the first in a trilogy of novels by Pullman, for young people. It was made into a popular movie. The Halton-Peel group is part of the Humanist Association of Canada.
