"I've gone to everybody and their brother. Where you can be helpful is with our friends at the province. "Get on the phone today, or write a letter. We need you to start going to the provincial government and saying that Halton has got a financial problem." Carr said he met with Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn last week to ask for a loan guarantee that would help protect the region if it takes on the debt to build, then sees a delay in growth-related revenues due to a significant economic downturn. He is also urging the province to reduce Halton's costs by taking back responsibility for social services which were downloaded to the region in the 1990s. "If we were to hit a slowdown, we'd be in big, big trouble in terms of the finances of the region," he said. Currently home to about 439,000 residents, Halton is expected to grow to 650,000 by 2021, and to 780,000 by 2031. The region has calculated that the population growth will require the construction of 25 community centres, eight libraries, 22 fire halls, six police stations and 2,000 lane kilometres of roadway. More schools, buses, police and landfill capacity will also be needed, along with 1,100 new hospital beds. While a new hospital now planned for lect only eight per cent of all tax dollars in Canada, and simply don't have the necessary tools to adequately fund the costs they are required to bear. He urged both the federal and provincial governments to consider the needs of communities, noting, "With the huge federal surpluses, if we can't do it now, when are we going to be able to do it?" The Indian food Oakville has been waiting for... Halton Regional Chair Cary Carr Oakville will reduce that number, Carr noted that Halton is looking at imposing a regional tax levy to collect the $60 to $100 million needed to be contributed by the community to fund it. He argues that legislative changes are needed to allow the region to collect development charge dollars to help build new hospitals required because of growth. Carr also reiterated a number of the problems that municipalities across Canada have been highlighting for several years, including the $123 billion national infrastructure deficit. In Halton, the infrastructure deficit or the amount of money currently needed to make necessary repairs or upgrades to roads and facilities is estimated at more than $300 million. Carr added that municipalities col- Real Indian food served the real Indian way...
