Oakville's unique identity will be maintained by continuing to require high quality, innovative and diverse urban design and built form. Oakville is an attractive community with high quality urban design and built form. All new development will maintain or improve upon these high standards by respecting the existing built context through design, placement and scale of development. A built environment that integrates natural features, cultural heritage features and facilities, community character and streetscapes in a complementary form will be encouraged. A vigorous local economy will be maintained by providing a diverse range of employment opportunities that continues to attract a variety of high quality employers. The Town is strategically located and accessible through a variety of transportation modes, which will attract knowledge-based companies in order to leverage the strengths of the community and reflect community interests. The safety and livability of existing and emerging neighbourhoods will be protected and enhanced. Public health will be protected and safety ensured by directing development away from potential public risk. Active healthy lifestyles will be supported for residents of all ages by providing opportunities for the safe pursuit of wellness, learning and leisure. While the principles outlined during the open house were numerous what was missing, much to the disappointment of many of the residents in attendance, was a discussion on what the implementation of these principles would actually mean. One woman asked for a definition on what a `well established neighbourhood', mentioned in principle one, was to which staff responded that a future study would determine that. Other residents had concerns that the proposed minimizing of the Town's ecological footprint was not spelled out, while others voiced worries about how the intensification of employment land were not defined. The Town's Long Range Planning Manager Allen Ramsay noted the evening's open house was more about getting community feedback on the direction the Town should take rather than figuring out the details of how the Town is going to get there. "It is important to get a context before you start crafting policies on this and that," he said. "This council feels it is important to make a statement on how they want to address growth and development." With the open house complete the visioning process will next be discussed at a statutory public meeting on March 17, where residents can address council concerning what they think about the principles.
