Vol. 47 No. 31 Winning form MP's not swayed by Stop War protest Halton group pickets constituency offices By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The shrill squeal of whistles and the chanting of anti-war slogans briefly interrupted the normal tranquility of Marine Drive on Monday as a group of protesters took a stand against the conflict in Afghanistan. Activists from the newly-formed group `Stop War Halton' picketed outside Oakville MP Bonnie Brown's constituency office in one of a series of actions that took place across the region with the constituency offices of Halton MP Garth Turner and Burlington MP Mike Wallace receiving similar treatment. "We're here to send a message to the MP's office," said protest organizer, Brian Hopkins, at the Brown protest. "There's a vote later this week on the possible (mission) extension of Canadian troops in Afghanistan. We oppose this." The protesters are calling on the local MPs to vote `No' on a compromise between the Liberals and Conservatives that would see Canada's mission in Afghanistan extended to 2011. The Bloc Quebecois and New Democratic Party have made it known they will not support the compromise, however, the extension is still expected to make it through.
