The Blades were denied a four-game sweep of the Provincial Junior A Hockey League's West Conference championship series Wednesday with a 4-3 overtime loss, but have an opportunity to finish off the Raiders tonight in Oakville. Playing a desperate, defensive brand of hockey helped the Georgetown Raiders remain alive in the playoffs for at least two more days. But the Oakville Blades can still advance to the next round of playoffs with a victory on home ice tonight (a 7:30 start at Joshua's Creek Arenas). The first-place Blades, who now lead the best-of-7 OHA Provincial Jr. A Hockey League West Conference final 3-1, felt they could have swept the series if not for a controversial ending to Game 4 Wednesday in Georgetown. Raiders winger Jeremy Wick scored on a powerplay midway through the second overtime period to give Georgetown the 4-3 decision. The Raiders managed to fend off a furious late surge by the Blades, who hit the post twice in the first OT frame. It will likely, however, require something miraculous for Georgetown to extend the series further, as the Blades have beaten their Ninth Line nemesis in all five meetings in Oakville this season. Still, Wednesday's win meant the Raiders avoided the embarrassment of having been swept in the West Conference final for the second year in a row.
