www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 14, 2008 - 35 Atom AA Hornets in final The Oakville atom AA Hornets have enjoyed plenty of success recently, in both league and tournament play. The Hornets have advanced to the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League (LLFHL) final with a 2-1 semifinal series victory over Brampton, closing the series with a 6-0 rout. Oakville also posted a shutout in the series opener, 3-0, before Brampton forced a deciding third game with a 2-1 win. The LLFHL final will be contested in April. So will the OWHA provincial championships, which the Hornets have also qualified for. Meanwhile, in tournament play, the Hornets have won three of the five competitions they've participated in. The third gold of the year came at the Central York International Silver Stick, as Oakville edged Burlington in the final that required a shootout after scoreless regulation and overtime periods. Taylor McMahon and Madison Field scored for the Hornets in the shootout, while Oakville goalie Nikki Cece limited Burlington to only one goal. The previous weekend, the Hornets used similar dramatics to claim the championship at the London Devilettes tournament. Claire Merrick scored with seconds left in regulation time of the final against Whitby, sending the game to overtime, and Field notched the winner in a shootout. The Hornets have reached the finals in all five tournaments this season, with all final games needing overtime and four being decided in shootouts. Other members of the team are Olivia Atkinson, Kaitlyn Norris, Cassidy Miller, Kristin O'Neill, Emily Schnarr, Jacinta Kennedy, Kaitlyn McAllister, Laura Crowdis, MacKenzie Stamper, Breann Gallagher, Chloe Morrison and Jessica Geddes. Oakville won back-to-back tournaments last month, claiming gold at competitions in Ancaster and Hamilton. All members of the team contributed to the recent success, which bodes well for the Venom's chances at provincials. The all-Ontario tournament will begin April 4. Players on the squad are Marq Joaquim, Braedan Robinson, John Nicholson, Nicholas McDonald, Kanen MacLellan, Samory Fonderson, Carter Johnson, Kyle Shannon, Korey Loi, Cole Traynor, Darian Rahimi, Ross Perri and J'Rhon James. Zych made a surprise return from an injured knee suffered in Game 1, while the 21-year-old Stuart kept his composure as the Blades found their game in the third period, outshooting Georgetown 14-4. The hard-charging Raiders finally benefited from some favourable bounces to build a 3-0 advantage in the second period, outshooting the regular-season division champs 23-10 through 40 minutes. But the Blades rallied in the third, forcing extra time on a Nick McParland goal, his second on the night, with less than four minutes left in regulation. Oakville dominated much of the first overtime period, then took a too-many-men infraction early in the second OT that seemed to give the Raiders some hope. Shortly after Oakville killed that penalty, Blades' defender Scott Judson was assessed a slashing major at the 11:39 mark of the second overtime period after Georgetown centre Andrew Ella crashed head-first into the boards behind the Oakville goal. Ella, who scored one of the Raiders' goals and played a key defensive role as well, was cut on top of his head, lying on the ice for several minutes before he was helped off. The 20-year-old from Schomberg was walking around in the dressing room after the game, but his status for Game 5 is uncertain. "I couldn't see it, but (referee Brent Holdsworth) told us he couldn't just call a two-minute penalty. I don't think our guy slashed him," said Oakville head coach Carlo Coccimiglio. "I think (Ella) stepped on a stick and lost control. I actually thought the penalty was going the other way, because of the way (Ella) hit (Jeff) Grenier. It was just disappointing the way it ended." The Raiders scored 30 seconds into the subsequent man advantage as Wick rifled a loose puck into the net from close range. "It just worked out perfectly," said Wick, who netted his fifth goal in seven playoff starts. "(Andrew) Bathgate got it down low to (Mark) McGowan, and he tried jamming it in the side, then it popped out right to me. It's one win, and that's how we've got to do it. Just one game at a time." Anthony Luciani and Marcus Pryde also scored for Georgetown, which outshot Oakville 41-35 overall in front of more than 600 spectators. Jeremy Welsh had the other Blades' marker. Game 6, if necessary, will be at Georgetown's Alcott Arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PLAY BALL! ...with the Oakville Girls Softball Association.
