"We do have a winter reserve of about $835,000, and we have the ability to access this reserve fund to help offset our expenses this year. If that's not enough we would go into some other corporate reserves that the Town has. So, there is no issue here of us running out of money and not being able to do something. We will continue doing what we have to do, but it is costing us more." Besides causing monetary problems, this year's excessive snowfall has created storage problems, as well, with Cozzi reporting that the town's snow dump, located at 1140 South Service Rd. W., is completely full. Again, Cozzi points out there is no need for panic. Arrangements have been made to use Town-owned land North of Dundas Street as a temporary snow dumpsite. While this snow storage problem will sort itself out with the arrival of warmer weather, the winter-related menace of potholes will survive the season's end. "We're actively dealing with those as quickly as we can," said Cozzi. "But, as we take breaks to deal with winter storms, we're unable to patch holes and then more holes appear." Cozzi said this year's severe winter has created a large number of potholes, which he expects will take several months to get a handle on. "In some cases we're filling potholes and we're going back the very next day and filling the same pothole all over again," he said. "It's difficult for the material to stick or remain in the pothole when it is so cold." Town work crews are currently filling potholes on the same main streets, which are given priority during a snowfall, with residential roads currently being a low priority. Cozzi said that with the weekend's storm now largely cleaned up, work crews are free to concentrate on potholes. "Starting today (Wednesday) we're blitzing the town with our crews because we have available crews now to do more pothole repairs than winter maintenance," he said. "Throughout the day and into the early evening we're running our crews to fix potholes. We expect to do that for several days in a row because I'm not expecting any real bad weather." In the meantime, anyone who damages their vehicle through a pothole encounter can contact the Town's insurance adjustor at 905-845-6601 ext. 3077. Cozzi said the claim will be reviewed and addressed accordingly, however, chances of a payment being offered up are slim as this would require proof of negligence on the Town's part. "It's difficult to assign negligence when you've had such a severe winter and it's just physically impossible for a municipality to repair potholes as quickly as they need to be repaired," said Cozzi. The resident's information will be taken down and relayed to the proper professionals for evaluation. For cars damaged by potholes on regional roads residents are advised to call 905-825-6000 and explain the situation to a customer service representative. · ROHDE · MEPHISTO · DANIEL HECHTER PARIS · BIRKENSTOCK · RIEKER · ARA · ROHDE · MEPHISTO
