www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 14, 2008 - 5 Small steps can make a big difference A s the Town's newly-appointed Municipal Energy Conservation Officer, I encourage all Oakville residents to take Earth Hour as an opportunity to think about ways in which you can reduce your energy consumption. Here are a few small steps you can take to that make a big difference: · Turn off all your lights. Remember to change your incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL). CFLs save money and reduce emissions. · Turn off the TV. Unplug all your electronics and small appliances, idle electronics continue to use energy when in a constant state of standby. · Turn down your thermostat. A 4degree celsius difference at night will cut your gas bill by 10 per cent. · Host an Earth Hour party. Enjoy your friends' company while reducing your energy consumption. · Talk about climate change. Learn about climate change and how it's affecting your environment. · Take a night walk. Spend some time with nature, and take in the sights and sounds of the environment that surrounds you. For more information on Earth Hour, visit www.oakville.ca/earthhour.htm. I have heard a number of interesting stories from residents on what they're doing for Earth Hour.
