In its rankings of the country's most dangerous cities, Maclean's rated Halton as Canada's fourth safest place to live and the safest in the Greater Toronto Area. Halton's police chief said the ranking underlines the exceptional policing and crime prevention work done by staff. "I am especially proud of this result, considering Halton has one of the lowest police officer-to-population ratios in Ontario, with only one uniformed police officer for every 811 members of the public," said Gary Crowell. He cited the service's community policing partnerships, youth programs and close working relationships with cultural, ethnic and faith-based groups, as factors in the high ranking. The police service also participates in numerous diversity programs, including some in partnership with the Halton Multicultural Council. Police service staff receive help from more than 200 community volunteers who participate in auxiliary policing, community consultation committees, Communities on Patrol (COPP) and Seniors And Law Enforcement Together. "Police cannot work in isolation," said Crowell. "In Halton, we benefit from having very active community members, who are interested in working closely with us to keep Halton as safe tomorrow as it is today." On March 15 just after 2 p.m., police say the woman walked into the Bank of Montreal on Third Line, said she was armed and then demanded cash. The suspect was last seen walking south from the bank with an undisclosed amount of money. No one was hurt during the robbery. The woman is described as white, 40 to 50 years old, 5-foot-five, 140 pounds, heavy set with a fair complexion. She wore a pink coloured ski jacket pulled up over her face. The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate this incident. The purpose of the Study is to address various issues including, but not limited to: · Existing and future travel demand · Land servicing needs · Pedestrian, cycling and transit facilities · Operational and infrastructure deficiencies · Approved and proposed changes in land use In developing a preferred design, consideration will be given to technical requirements of the Town, needs/concerns of the local community, as well as local environmental and economic constraints. The study is expected to be complete by the end of 2008. The study will follow the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, October 2000, as amended in 2007. In the past, the Oakville Fire Department (OFD) has been granted funding for its emergency preparedness projects. The most recent project was a tabletop exercise on pandemic planning. The funding came from Emergency Management Ontario through their Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP) that funded 45 per cent of the cost of conducting this emergency planning exercise. JEPP was created to encourage cooperation between the federal and provincial/territorial governments to improve emergency services across the country, and is administered by Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada.
