www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 19, 2008 - 19 Red Cross urgently needs volunteers to drive and more The Red Cross in Oakville is in urgent need of volunteers for its Transportation program and to assist with administration tasks. There is also a need for Disaster Management volunteers to help promote disaster preparedness and to respond to disasters in the community. "Volunteering is an excellent way to learn new skills, meet new people, and help make a difference in the community," said John Robertson, Branch President for the Oakville and North Halton Branches. "As a Red Cross volunteer you would be part of the largest humanitarian organization in the world." Transportation Services volunteers drive seniors, disabled persons, and others who are unable to drive or take public transportation to medical appointments, dialysis treatments and Adult Day Programs. Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and have 2 years of driving experience including a clean driver's licence. Volunteers are also needed right now to assist with the important administrative tasks required to keep this large and active program running. "For some Halton residents our volunteers are the only means for them to get out of the house for important appointments and social interaction," said Robertson. "This is such an important service and we don't have enough volunteers right now to meet the need that exists." In Disaster Management, volunteers respond when disasters ranging from house fires to blackouts affect the community. Volunteers also help community members become better prepared for disaster through the delivery of preparedness workshops. "Full training is provided, at no cost, to our volunteers, and these are often excellent opportunities for retirees, part time workers or parents who have children in school," said Robertson. The Canadian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which includes the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and 185 national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Its mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world.
