www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 19, 2008 - 5 Six people joined Williams for annual walk YOU K THAN RIO Continued from page 3 ONTA CANADA'S other participants began to trickle in. This included Agatha Platiel, 71, who used the occasion to promote the 175th anniversary of Oakville's Knox Presbyterian Church. "It was really nice to walk outside all day," said Platiel. "Oakville was a little more treacherous from Southdown Road on because the sidewalks were really not plowed, so we had to walk on the road and hope the trucks would go around us." Platiel, who had a back operation in 2006, said this is the second walk she has completed with Williams. While she said it was fun, she feels she probably will not do it again, noting that undertaking such a long journey at 71-plus would require more intensive training. "I am tired, but I'm certainly not sore," said Platiel. "I'll probably put some ice on my calves to settle the muscles down and then I'll have a nice warm bath. That will be a nice ending to a great day." Stan and Karen MacDonald also considered the walk to be a great experience. "It was a good walk, the weather was great, the roads were clear all the way and I think we made pretty good time," said Stan. "We didn't walk really fast or anything so we're not too tired," added Karen. Stan, who undertook the walk with Williams last year, brought Karen along this time to share the experience. "I always used to read about Eddie doing it when I was growing up, so I thought I'd give it a try," he said. "It's great, I'm surprised more people don't do it," said Karen. John Hearn celebrated his birthday by going on the walk along with companion Sue Tipper, who finished the race despite having to fight through some pain issues. Raychyl Whyte, who was practically incapacitated after her first walk with Williams last year, emerged from this walk in much better condition. "Last year I tried to keep up with Eddie, which I've learned is an impossible task," she said. "I just didn't do that so I'm not in as rough shape." While many of Williams' companions are uncertain as to whether they will walk again next year, Williams is adamant that he will keep the tradition going. "I'm planning on doing it again," he said. "I don't know why I wouldn't do it, unless I was physically incapable, and it would really have to be something where I was practically disabled to stop me from doing it." Williams would like to continue these walks until 2011, when he will have honoured the St. Patrick's Day tradition through five decades, but for the moment, with 40 kilometres worth of aches to deal with, Williams is grateful walk number 33 is a year away.
