www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 21, 2008 - 17 St. Vincent's students perform daily chores for a good cause By Mandi Hargrave SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER For children at St. Vincent Elementary School, doing chores around the house has a whole new meaning this Easter. As part of a project that's close to St. Vincent's principal Brendan Browne's heart, students have been collecting money for chores they do at home during the 40 days of Lent. The money will go towards Bethany Children's Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya, which is funded by donations. "Through these small acts of charity they can make a difference as a community and around the world," said Browne. Browne's father-in-law, Dr. Ivan Stewart, is the chair of Bethany Relief and Rehabilitation International. Stewart frequently travels to Kenya to help with the work Bethany Children's Hospital. The hospital opened in 2001 and helps children with physical disabilities as they are usually shunned by their family. They are given surgeries so they can be accepted by their society and contribute to it. "I'm just proud of the work they do and the work my father-in-law does," said Browne. He wanted to encourage students to make a difference over Lent, a good time to be charitable, and make a global connection the way his father-in-law has done. St. Vincent has a philanthropic approach to helping others and encourages students to act locally and think globally, as the school does a number of fundraisers for local organi- zations as well. Browne wants to plant a philanthropic seed in his students so they learn from a young age that they can make a difference and contribute to society. "It's important they recognize they can make a difference in society," he said. Students became very excited about the idea from the kick-off assembly and began asking how they could help. "It's great to get them, as young as possible, to see how they can make a difference." At the end of Easter the school will collect the money students have raised. Browne is also encouraging the students' parents to match the donations made by their children. All of the funds will go towards surgeries at Bethany Children's Hospital. If anyone else in the community wants to help the school with this effort they can contact the principal via phone at 905-849-0777 or e-mail at browneb@hcdsb.org. "We'd love the support of the greater Oakville community," said Browne.
