10 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 22, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com TIC T AC TOE Fathering: What I Know Now... By Nikki Taylor Parent Education Manager I have had the great fortune to learn about fathering from the most knowledgeable experts ... fathers themselves. While facilitating parent groups for dads, I have come to many new realizations about men, and how they see their role as fathers. Here are some of the things I know now: 1. Given the right environment, and the opportunity, men will openly talk about their fathering experiences with other men. 2. Men want to be good fathers. They think a lot about what kind of father they want to be. 3. Men and women parent differently and that is ok. Children gain so much when fathers are able to parent their way. 4. Men's roles in society are changing and there is much stress and confusion about what men are expected to do in their role as parents. 5. Research tells us that involved fathers have a significant and positive influence on the successful outcomes of their children. 6. Dads can do it! Men are capable of loving, nurturing and caring for children. I want to thank the men who have participated in the FI-BOCC groups that I have facilitated for this invaluable insight. It has not only benefited my own family, but I am on a mission now, to share the news with other women and moms.
