2- The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 22, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Tax Saving Strategies Many families can significantly reduce their total tax bill by shifting income to members who are taxed at a lower rate. But this requires planning. Consider these income splitting strategies: SPOUSAL STRATEGIES · New for 2007 tax filing any pension income which is defined as any income eligible for the pension credit may be split with a spouse or common-law partner who are both residents of Canada. · Spousal Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) are a way to reduce future tax by enabling the two partners to balance their retirement incomes. · The Canada and Quebec Pension Plans allow couples to evenly split the retirement benefits earned during their time together. This is called "assignment," and requires a specific request. · The higher-income spouse can lend the other spouse money for investment. Interest must be charged, but can be fixed at the Canada Revenue Agency's low "prescribed rate." · Say the lower-income spouse inherits a valuable asset, such as artwork or a cottage. The higher-income spouse can buy it, so the other gets investable cash without losing use of the property. · You can sell your spouse securities, such as mutual funds and stocks, at fair market value. Any further growth is taxable for the spouse. Or, sell your spouse an option to buy that holding at today's price on or before a future date. The above are just a few ways of many to reduce your current and future tax burden. Oakville resident joins NHL alumni in Afghanistan By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Stanley Cup in tow, a group of National Hockey League alumni suited up for a series of ball hockey games against Canadian soldiers in Kandahar earlier this week. Among the former pros taking on Canadian troops are Oakville's Brad Dalgarno, who played 11 seasons with the New York Islanders, and Stu Grimson, an enforcer who retired with the L.A. Kings in 2002. This `Team Canada' visit to Afghanistan is the second in as many years and is intended to boost the morale of the country's troops. This marks the second year NHL Alumni, led by two-time Stanley Cup winner Mark Napier, made the trip to Kandahar. Dalgarno, a right winger who retired from the NHL in 1997 and now runs a marketing company, told his wife Lesley in e-mail correspondence that the NHLers got "a big dose of perspective pretty early." "This morning was tough," he wrote in an e-mail sent early on in the trip, just after Team Canada landed in Dubai on the first leg of its trip. "One of the killed troops came to Brad Dalgarno camp here this morning. All the troops from Canada, Australia and ourselves were on the tarmac as the casket came off the back of the plane." The alumni flew out of Ottawa on Sunday to Dubai, where they played a ball hockey game with troops at that camp a game accompanied by an impromptu concert by Canada's Blue Rodeo. The NHLers then flew to Kandahar airfield. They'll be staying at a base there until their return home tomorrow. "Here at camp Kandahar, things are much better than I ever imagined," Dalgarno, a father of three Quinn, Sydney and Hannah told his family via e-mail. "Although all you see are armoured vehicles and guns, there is no sense of concern in camp about any threats. "The soldiers here are just so happy to see us and talk to us." Dalgarno described the soldiers as "articulate, intelligent people doing their time, but looking to days after their tour." He said what surprised him most is that "everyone is excited about the work they're doing...from the battle group (fighting soldiers) to the support crews." Lesley said her husband was approached to take part in the trip, and once he heard all the details, his lone concern was getting the time off work. "They flew to Dubai in the same plane the Prime Minister uses, and from Dubai to Kandahar in a Hercules Plane," she said. "That right there is a dream come true. He even said he was in the cockpit when the plane landed in Dubai. "To top it off," she added, "you get to do something very rewarding, playing ball hockey with the troops. Making a human connection is what Brad was interested in." When organizers chose the date for the Second Annual Sydney Clark Fundraiser for Sick Kids, Do You Believe in Magic, they didn't realize that their event would coincide with Earth Hour. When 8 p.m. rolls around on March 29, the lights will dim and the 300 guests at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club in Milton will dine by candlelight as they honour Earth Hour while raising money for The Hospital for Sick Children. "Right from the minute I realized that we were raising money for Sick Kids the same night as Earth Hour, I thought it was perfect. "We could raise money for such a worthy cause while at the same time educating our dinner guests about the importance of the environment," said Oakville's Nancy Clark, whose daughter Sydney is the guest of honour at the dinner. Sydney was stricken with Reye's Syndrome at 15, and nearly didn't survive. But the staff at Sick Kids believed in her, her family and friends believed in her and, most importantly, Sydney never lost belief in herself.
