When new management or a change in store layout sends a Fareshare collection bin awry at a local supermarket, it's Ziegel who ventures out to sort out the issue in person with follow up correspondence. When too much Kraft Dinner or canned soup is collected than can be used locally, it's Ziegel who packs it in his van to deliver it to a Toronto mission or food bank. When collections need to be done in town, it's Ziegel who climbs behind the wheel of his van. When it comes to the million and one things that need to be done in connection with Fareshare's two annual food drives, Ziegel is the man doing them. When it comes to cleaning up the food bank premises, Ziegel has mop, or hammer, as the need arises, in hand. When it comes to liaising with local schools, it's Ziegel who knows both the school system and the food bank. For example, for the last four years, Pinegrove Public School has worked in large part to keep Fareshare stocked up with laundry detergent, collecting just that on food drives. The manager of the new "I have no qualms about approaching people or begging for something, all the stuff I never had to do ... Well, I wouldn't say I never had to do it." Ron Ziegel, Oakville Fareshare food bank volunteer Fortinos turns out to be a former OTHS student and Ziegel said the store was more than happy to provide pastry, instead of the bread it originally offered -- and when the food bank's bread supply was jeopardized, stepped in to fill both needs. "I work to keep a balanced inventory," said Ziegel, noting boxes of donations now sitting out to the edge of the aisle, will in just a few months be dwindled down to only a handful. Some local stores know Ziegel, and when a toiletries sale comes up, lets him know so the food bank can load up on the sale. "I have no qualms about approaching people or begging for something, all the stuff I never had to do ... well, I wouldn't say I never had to do it," said Ziegel. Asked why he does it all, Ziegel answers simply that everyone has a tough time when they are young, just starting out or with a new family ... and besides, like he said, what else would he do. In addition to non-perishable food donations during the Easter food drive, Fareshare needs volunteers for three-hour shifts, or more, to hand out food drive paper bags at the Real Canadian Superstore. Students can use the hours for their required community service hours. Those interested can call Ziegel at 905-845-8014. Food donations can be dropped off at the food bank located at 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday to Saturday, all Oakville fire stations and in all Oakville supermarkets where collection bins have been provided by Fareshare. While all non-perishable donations are welcome, those that invariably run short during the year include: canned fruit, canned vegetables (except corn), cookies and crackers, vegetable oil, canned stew, junior baby food, baby formula and desserts. Cash is also welcomed as it is used to provide vouchers redeemable at local supermarkets for milk and fresh fruit. Fareshare also uses it to purchase meats and items that run low at the food bank. For information or to donate, visit Fareshare at 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6 or call 905-847-3988.
