While the physical library at OTMH remains a popular location, more and more users are turning to online database searches to answer their queries ­ generating up to 300 inquiries per month over HHS' three sites. Nycomed Canada Inc., an Oakville-based pharmaceutical company, active in the therapeutic areas of gastroenterology, respirology and dermatology, has played a key role in ensuring that HHS' library materials are always up-to-date and relevant. Since 2002, they have generously donated more than $87,000 to support ongoing learning and health education through HHS' library resources. In particular, the company's financial assistance has enabled the Library to renew and maintain its collection of e-journals ­ valuable tools that support evidence-based practice which in turn improves patient outcomes. HHS Launches eLearning Centre Halton Healthcare Services' (HHS) staff can now log on from any computer that has high speed internet access - at work, home, or their favourite internet café and with just a few clicks of their mouse, take courses online, anytime at their convenience, through HHS' new eLearning Centre. HHS purchased and implemented a Learning Management System (LMS) in 2007 to host its courses online and help administer its eLearning Centre. A number of customized courses have since been developed in-house at HHS, such as a Privacy and Confidentiality module, while a number of externally developed courses, such as the Ministry of Health's Hand Hygiene module, have also been successfully adapted to HHS' training needs. Once loaded onto the LMS, these courses are made available to staff through HHS' new, web-based eLearning Centre. With eLearning, a 24/7 multi-site organization like HHS has the capability to train very large groups of staff very quickly despite their varying schedules. To-date over 1,100 staff have participated in eLearning at HHS since the launch of its first courses in February of 2007. Having access to these resources benefits individuals throughout HHS, including: · Physicians who can access these databases from their offices if they wish and use them to reference current literature that will help them with diagnosis and treatment options for improved patient care; · Nurses who are continuing their education and can access the electronic journals to assist with their research projects; and · Patients' families who are seeking additional information about their loved ones' conditions so they can better understand the options available to them and make more informed decisions.
