"They almost have to prove they are straight. Our daughter hasn't come across it yet, but we know there will be a day where, because she has two moms, (people will think) she must be (a lesbian), too. All we can do is prepare her for how people might treat her." Her daughter is still hesitant about whom to tell she has two moms, but she recently told her class after a discussion about racism. "One boy in her class said `I know what it's like to be discriminated against because I have a lesbian mother'" HartDay said. "It took her all day, but she told her class, `I have two moms.' We were extremely proud of her because we know how much courage that took for her to do that." j Wallace agrees. As the Halton Organization for Pride and Education's (HOPE) coordinator of the Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) for the Halton District School Board's high schools, he said students and teachers, gay or straight, who join the GSAs are often opening themselves to the possibility of ridicule. "Anytime someone makes a stand to say `This is wrong,' they're being really brave," he said. "A lot of the students are really interested in justice and want to make their school a safer place. How often do you have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in someone's day-to-day life?" Wallace has helped establish five GSAs in Halton and is working with four other schools to establish groups. Think Green. Breathe Easy. HUGE CENTRAL AIR & FURNACE $ Up to PLUS BRONTE RD Remember... Among issues students have raised are how to get rid of anti-gay graffiti on walls, on desks or in textbooks and how to get more resources about gay issues in the school library. Resources were sadly lacking when Wallace was growing up in Oakville. Considered to be a tomboy in school, he didn't like skirts and dresses and played on the boys' soccer team (which wasn't unusual considering there wasn't a girls team). However, living as a girl "just didn't feel right, but it was not like I was in the wrong body." By high school, he had changed his name to the ambiguous j. For a while, he lived as a lesbian. "It didn't feel right either, but it was closer." After moving away to school and having better access to services, support groups and medical care, Wallace decided to transition. Wallace said in some ways it is more difficult to be transpersonal, than gay -- though he acknowledges that neither is easy -- simply because the changes, such as clothing, are more obvious. "As a lesbian, I could show up somewhere and not be (seen as) a lesbian," he said. "When you transition sexes, there's no way to hide that." And the issues, bathroom access for example, only become more complicated. "The amount of challenges (trans people) face are so difficult, they don't take these things lightly," he said. "You don't take on these challenges unless it's really important to you and how you live in the world." Wallace said his family has been very supportive of his transition and has had little negative reaction. "People tell me I'm much happier, and I am," he said. "And that's a lot more me feeling comfortable with who I am." While many people preach tolerance when it comes to those different from them, Lisa says she would rather be accepted than tolerated. "Being tolerant just means you're putting up with it. I don't want to teach tolerance when I can teach acceptance." That's one of the reasons she enjoys working with children. "Adults are far more judgmental," she said. "We learn judgments and stereotypes from what we're brought up with. Kids are kids, they like people for who they are." 3RD LINE 4TH LINE Trafalgar Community Policing Committee Invites You To Learn About GRAFFITI Right Here in Oakville "What Are the SocioEconomic Impacts?"
