24 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 2, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Rugby registration The Oakville Crusaders Rugby Club is preparing for another season of exciting action. The club will hold registrations on Saturday, April 5 at its clubhouse located on 9th Line, between Dundas Road and Upper Middle Road, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The club offers programs for all age groups. Its "minis" program provides children 5-10 years of age an opportunity to play a co-ed, non-contact game, built around having fun and learning the basics of the sport. As players progress through the system, they are introduced to contact and the focus becomes increased playing time and developing individual skills. The Crusaders have also added many new age-specific programs for both men and women. This is designed to even the difference in size between age groups. The season will culminate July 19 with the celebration of the club's 40th anniversary. It will include a full day of rugby for all ages and a gala dinner. All past and present members are encouraged to attend the celebration. However, coach Dwayne Clarke knew his team was resilient. "Playing against a mirror image of themselves didn't faze them a bit," said Clarke. The Rangers bounced back and won the next two games of the series, finishing off the Terriers 5-2 Friday at the Orillia Community Centre to capture the Ed Brown Memorial Trophy. Oakville got goals from Joey Berkopec and Mike Matson to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. The Rangers pulled ahead 3-2 in the second frame on a goal by Jacob Saunders, then gave themselves some breathing room when Brett Goold snapped a shot into the top corner on a penalty shot. Cole Purboo added an insurance marker into an empty net late in regulation to complete their magical season. Ryan Menne, Harrison Clarke and Goold each added assists. Clarke stressed fun and friendship over winning and individual stats, a strategy that inspired his team to a regular season mark of 22-4-2. "We kept them insulated from stats," said Clarke, who witnessed his team outscore its opponents by a ratio of 129-47 in its 28 league games. "They were just there to play hockey. That's something for the coaches to worry about." The Rangers managed to skate through the first round of the playoffs unscathed, despite stiff competition. "The top five teams in our division, you could've tossed a coin to decide a winner," said Clarke. The Rangers disposed of all six of their opponents in the round robin for a 6-0 record. The group of eight-year-olds went on to sweep the Guelph Jr. Storm in the Tri-County quarterfinals. The Rangers then pulled out a hard-fought series win over the Hespeler Shamrocks in five games. In the finals, Oakville took the first game 3-1. The second game ended in a 11 draw, and Orillia tied the series in the third game. Oakville won a close Game 4, by a score of 4-3, before the series-clinching win in Game 5. Clarke says they will bring their season full circle later this month. "We're going to end it the same way we started," he said. "With a game of laser tag." Other members of the team are Colton Incze, Kyle Salmon, Tyler Sampson, Kyle Petta Ionescu, Kyle Barrett, Jacob Gower, Curtis Fernandes, James Gabura, Liam Donnelly and Nathaniel Gerchikov. Desmond Fernandes, Scott Goold and Steve Sampson also coach the team. Judy Gower and Nigela Purboo are the managers.
