www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 2, 2008 - 3 Candlelight dinners proved popular at restaurants Continued from page 2 Duncan Chisholm said that his visiting granddaughter, who was doing her homework, insisted that the lights be turned off. "We were sitting, listening to the radio and talking. It was very peaceful," he said. "We were sitting, listening to the radio and talking. It was very peaceful." Duncan Chisholm Janet Ellis said she "Shut off every possible thing, with the exception of the fridge and freezer." She and her husband, Kris, lit candles, poured some wine, and took it easy. At the Twisted Fork restaurant, manager Michael Killip said that during Earth Hour, "[Customers] were very in tune to what was going on, and very patient," considering it was a challenge to operate in complete darkness. "A wonderful feeling went over the room." At Seasons Restaurant, George Couto numbered the crowd at about 120, exceeding the usual Saturday turnout of about 75 customers. Lights were off the entire evening, from 5 p.m. until midnight. It wasn't until the last patron left that they were turned back on. SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER NO UTILITIES IN THIS GAME: The Walden Family from left, Julie, Jay and Dale spent Earth Hour playing Monopoly by the light of the fireplace and a flashlight. "There were a few instances of broken glasses, with the wait staff missing a step," Couto said. St. Jude's Church celebrated Earth Hour with lots of fanfare and 350 people in attendance. "(The event) was sold out. People were trying to buy tickets at the door," said Don Pangman, artistic director of the church's Celebration of the Arts program. The tolling of the bell tower marked the beginning of the hour of darkness, and it was "incredibly magic. Beyond my expectations," according to Pangman. "Out of the Dark opened with a message about how we must care more about the precious resources that we often take for granted, and how we can all join a revolution of change that will benefit the entire planet," wrote Pangman in an e-mail. "And it was also an opportunity to celebrate music and our youth, and to support the vulnerable and less fortunate." Ron Shantz, Executive Director of Kerr Street Ministries, spoke about growing up in an abusive family, and five choir members gave impact statements about the environment. A total of $6,000 was raised at the event, which benefited Kerr Street Ministries, the Oakville Environmental Fund, and Oakville Senior Children's Choir. "It's great to see that so many people took part in the Earth Hour challenge," Mayor Rob Burton stated in a news release issued by the Town of Oakville. "Climate change is something that affects us all. The Town of Oakville will continue to support environmental stewardship by finding innovative ways to conserve energy. I encourage all Oakville residents to do the same." Spring into Savings When the brand names come from overseas! Buy Canadian for Less!! We service anywhere from the Golden Horseshoe to the GTA.
