www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 9, 2008 - 37 "MASONRY & FIREPLACE DESIGN SPECIALISTS" Jewish Historical Museum exhibit at Appleby College Appleby College and the Goethe Institut Toronto are copresenting the art exhibit Charlotte Salomon: Life? Or Theatre? at the college this month. This exhibition of prints by Charlotte Salomon (19171943) from the Jewish Historical Museum, Amsterdam, will be displayed in the John Guest Student Commons (Raymond Massey Reading Room) from April 10-26. Salomon was born in Berlin in 1917 and grew up in an assimilated Jewish family as the daughter of a surgeon and a singer. The events of 1933 changed the family's situation drastically, and she escaped in 1939 to her grandparents' estate in the south of France. The Gestapo arrested her there in 1943, and deported her to Auschwitz, where she was murdered. Before her arrest she gave her complete work to a friend reminding him: "Please keep this safe: C'est tout ma vie! This is my entire life." Her 1,325 gouaches were painted between 1940 and 1942. In the desperation and loneliness of exile, Salomon projected her life onto an imaginary inner stage, where she rewrote the true story as a lyrical drama. Of particular interest for German speakers is the connection between Salomon's personal story in pictures and short written comments. The original exhibit is shown at the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam. The exhibition of the Goethe-Institut Toronto and Appleby College features 63 gouaches with commentary. Admission is free, and members of the public are welcome to tour the exhibition, but must pre-arrange a time with Dr. Patrick Carter, Appleby College, at 905-845-4681, ext. 290.
