www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 16, 2008 - 37 The Sound of Music Burl-Oak presents the Night of the Iguana Four unforgettable characters struggle with their gods and demons in Tennessee Williams' lively, humorous, and intensely emotional drama The Night of the Iguana opening on Thursday, April 24, presented by the Burl-Oak Theatre Group on the Oakville Centre stage running through until May 3. It's 1940 the Costa Verde on Mexico's isolated west coast. A defrocked, alcoholic priest leading a bus tour of American church women arrives at a run-down, seaside hotel managed by an earthy widow. In this claustrophobic, tropical pressure cooker, we are thrown in with a total of 14characters from a variety of nationalities, ages and social backgrounds. But Tennessee Williams reaches the emotions of the audience through four characters who are, like the iguana in the play, tethered at the "end of their ropes": the defrocked priest, Shannon, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, the recently widowed hotel manager, an other-worldly, spinster painter, and her ailing 97 year-old poet grandfather. Cloistered together in the sweltering heat, this intriguing quartet of characters is soon embroiled in a world of sexual tension, moral quandary, faltering faith and mystical transcendence as Williams explores the possibilities for redemption and healing. The Night of the Iguana, which first opened in 1961, is generally considered Williams' last Broadway success. Burl-Oak's The Night of the Iguana is on stage at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts from Thursday to Saturday, April 24 to 26 and Wednesday to Saturday, April 30 to May 3. Tickets at $25 are available through the Box Office at 905-815-2021 or toll free 1-888-4897784 or online at oakvillecentre.ca. Curtain at 8 pm.
