22 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 18, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Eco Festival at Glen Abbey Rec Centre Saturday The eighth annual Halton Eco Festival, a free, Earth Day environmental fair will be held Saturday, April 19. The festival, to be held at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre located on Third Line, just south of Upper Middle Road, will feature 18 educational workshops. "One of the most popular aspects of our free annual Halton Eco Festival (www.haltonecofest.ca) is the educational workshops," said event co-ordinator Stephen Dankowich, who operates the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPHER). "The 18 workshop topics and the organizational background of each individual presenter reflect the breadth and diversity of the rapidly developing environmental movement," said Dankowich. "We feel that these educational workshops are helping us to realize our goal of promoting the importance of environmental sustainability which is the theme of our eighth annual environmental fair," said Dankowich. In addition to these 18 educational workshops, the 2008 Halton Eco Festival features two hockey rinks filled with one hundred exhibitors including nine sponsoring organizations (Ten Thousand Villages, Project Greenlight, Town of Oakville, Smart Centre Oakville, GENEaction, Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association, Whole Foods Market Oakville, and the Kerr Village Organic Farmers' Market). Themed environmental areas include activism, automotive, books, education, energy, financial services, food, health and wellness, home and garden, natural products, nature, reduce-reuse-recycle, politics and government, and smart growth, according to Dankowich. "This free event also features a kids' eco fun area, a silent auction with more than 40 environmental gifts to bid on, a fun `Eco Jeopardy' game that we created, which challenges your knowledge of environmental issues, great food served by Whole Foods Market, and the opportunity to enjoy an organic ice cream cone," said Dankowich.
