That's the word from the $Million or More Oakville ($MOMO) campaign, which is running a Name the Elephant Contest to put a name to its campaign fundraising barometre designed by Oakville Beaver artistic director Steve Nease. More than a dozen entries were received shortly after the contest launched last week and more are added daily. While Nease created the pachyderm as the non-traditional barometre to track the success of the $Million or More Oakville campaign, he is leaving the elephant's name up to the public. The $Million or More Oakville fundraising campaign aims to raise $1 million, or more, from the Oakville community to help the people of Africa who are impacted by the growing and deadly situation of HIV/AIDS. All funds raised will be directed to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The campaign was launched late last year, but the contest was unveiled just this month. Soon members of the public will be able to watch as the stillto-be-named elephant's trunk transforms throughout the campaign as local residents reach out together to help people in Africa and increase Oakville's capacity to care. Entry deadline to the Name the Elephant contest is Sunday, April 27 at 5 p.m. -- either by email or post. Here's how to participate in the contest. Send the following information to the $Million or More Oakville Campaign either by email or mail. Those submitting an entry, will concurrently agree to have their name and photo published should they win. Contestants should include their name; age or age category: up to eight years, eight to 13 years, or 13 years and over; mailing address; telephone number; e-mail address; and their choice of name for the $Million or More Oakville elephant. Optional for inclusion is the reason for their name choice. The signature of a parent or guardian for participants aged 18 and under should also be included. Environmental activist Dr. Blake Poland will offer suggestions on how you can reduce your carbon footprint when he speaks at St. John's United Church on Monday, April 21 at 7.30 p.m. An Oakville resident, Poland is an associate professor in the department of public health sciences at the University of Toronto and health promotion critic for the Green Party of Canada. He is an internationally recognized expert in health promotion and community health development. Speaking from personal experience, he will describe how he and his family of three undertook more than 50 different initiatives to reduce their own carbon footprint ­ everything from avoiding the use of plastic bottles and eating locally grown, organic, in-season foods to litter-less lunches and cutting workrelated flying to conferences in half by using video-conferencing as a substitute. This event is part of an on-going public lecture series which focuses on current issues organized by the Power of One Committee at St. John's United Church. Admission is free. Everyone is welcome. ArtsCan Circle at Moonshine Café The Moonshine Café will host a fundraiser for the The Artscan Circle on Saturday, April 26. ArtsCan Circle is a Canadian, nonsectarian, charitable organization dedicated to linking creative artists with Native youth at risk in isolated communities of Canada.
