34 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 18, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Fair play at Battle of Books T he books have been read, the questions written and the last details are being put into place for the 2008 Battle of the Books. Many of our local schools will be preparing for this year's Battle of the Books at Oakville Public Library. The Battle of the Books competition has been responsible for creating a great opportunity to celebrate books and encourage reading in school age children for over 20 years. Every year our community schools and the Oakville Public Library work in partnership to organize this exciting competition and to ensure that the principles of team spirit and good sportsmanship are adhered to by all. To offer their expertise and creative inspiration two children's authors make their guests appearances. This year Frieda Wishinsky and Lucy (better known as L.M.) Falcone will offer the participants some insights into why they started and what inspires their writings. Frieda Wishinsky was raised in New York City and among her many Littlest Hobo and Are you Afraid of the Dark? and spent ten years in Los Angeles writing for TV and film before returning to Canada. She is a former teacher who resigned early in her career to pursue writing and has also worked as a Private Investigator to name just one of her other colourful jobs. Lucy is presently writing juvenile thrillers, the first of which, The Mysterious Mummer, received a Telefilm Canada grant to be adapted into a screenplay. Her most recent novels include Walking with the Dead, which won the Silver Birch Award in 2007 and The Banshee and Me. "Battle of the Books is a remarkable enterprise because it encourages students to not only read, but 'remember' wonderful books by some very talented authors. I can't image a more exciting and fun environment than to be around kids who love to read," she said. Lucy will be a sure hit with our senior teams and will be on hand to offer them some great advice, "Watch your absolute favourite show then turn off the TV. Start reading and start living." The competition will be split into two days with 18 senior teams battling at Central Branch on Tuesday, April 22 and 20 junior teams competing on Thursday, April 24. Junior level teams are made up of two students from each of Grades 3, 4 and 5; senior level teams consist of 2 students from each of Grades 6, 7 and 8. The top two teams from the junior and senior levels will proceed to the Grand Battle, also held at Central Branch library on Wednesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. Winners from the Grand Battle will then meet for the Regional Battle, which includes teams from Burlington, Milton, Halton Hills and Oakville Public Libraries at Halton Hills Public Library in Georgetown on Thursday, May 15 at 1 p.m. The library's Battle of the Books team have been enjoying a long and varied list of books in an attempt to create some mind-bending questions for this year's competition and are excited to be a part of this wonderful competition. The library would like to wish all the teams the best of luck, thank all the staff who develop the questions and allow full access to the library on these days and extend much appreciation to the Friends of the Oakville Public Library who fund this worthwhile annual event. If you think that your school has what it takes to compete next year, get reading and contact Deborah Grund at Oakville Public Library on dgrund@oakville.ca to find out how you can register. -- Submitted by the Oakville Public Library THE OAKVILLE WIND ORCHESTRA Dancing and Singing into Chris Arthurs Musical Director SPRING achievements she has taught children and adults with learning disabilities and also established a number of school libraries.
