That's exactly what the Titans did Thursday night in Burlington, knocking off the defending champion St. Timothy Blazers 44-31 to claim the championship. The Titans, the bronze medalist last season, lost their first two league games to open this year before rallying to finish the season at 5-2, winning the Elizabeth Seaton tournament along the way. They followed that up in the playoffs by winning the Oakville title and then earning their way into the Halton championship game to complete what coach Jim Stelter called "the triple crown." The Titans stormed out to a 193 lead but St. Timothy fought back to within nine in the final quarter. With momentum definitely not on their side, the Titans reeled off six straight points in the final two minutes to put the game away. "They put us on our heels a bit so we just had to do what we did all year," Stelter said. "And they didn't let the crowd rattle them." The St. Timothy rally was hurt by the loss of Greg Owen, who fouled out with three minutes to play. Owen led the Blazers with 17 points and was the only player with the size to defend the strong inside presence of the Titans' Phil Vargas and Chris Capizzano, who accounted for 14 of Mother Teresa's first 19 points. However, that role got him in foul trouble and he played 10 minutes with four fouls before his fifth sent him to the bench for the night. "He can definitely play. When he fouled out, it changed the course of the game," said Titan assistant Tim Durkin, "especially since we thought we had fouled him." Foul trouble also briefly sidelined Vargas in the fourth quarter but he returned in the final minute to score the last of his game-high 20 points. "He's the most dominant post player in grade school," Stelter said. Combined with Capizzano -- "an all-around athlete and leader" who is in his third year on the team -- who employed an effective hook shot to score half of his 12 points, the Titans were tough to match up against. Calvin D'Souza (five points), Devon Lio(four) and Jason Vargas provided strong support in moving the ball up the floor quickly and making strong passes.
