The Town of Oakville moved one step closer to a private tree protection bylaw, Monday night, with council directing staff to look into the feasibility of crafting such a complex piece of legislature. The bylaw, which is intended to protect and increase Oakville's tree canopy, would see permits required, in some situations, for the removal of trees on private property. While the nuts and bolts of the bylaw have yet to be worked out, some considerations include a possible charge of $100 per tree to remove five or more trees that are more than 20 cm in diameter. Any tree of more than 50 cm in diameter would require a permit that costs $200, while the removal of one to four trees that are more than 20 cm in diameter would require notification of the Town, but there would be no charge. It has also been recommended that a permit not be required for the removal of dead, dying or terminallydiseased trees. The issue of tree removal has generated considerable interest in the Oakville community with a crowd of around 40 people turning up at Monday's council meeting. Around a dozen delegations spoke about the proposed bylaw with some believing the bylaw is necessary to protect Oakville's trees, while others voiced distress over the Town's perceived infringement on the property rights of homeowners.
