W., Burlington Buzz open season with 6-3 win By Adam Johnston SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER There is plenty of optimism surrounding the Oakville Buzz junior B lacrosse team following their season-opening victory over the Mississauga Tomahawks on Sunday. The Buzz had a surprisingly successful season last year, finishing with a 14-4-2 record in the regular season and resulting in a playoff berth. Head coach Stuart Brown is confident that a productive off-season and a solid core of young veterans returning will push his team to the next level. "Internally, we have set a goal for making a run at the Founders Cup," said Brown, a product of the Oakville lacrosse system and former Buzz player. "From what I know about the league and the other teams, I think to set a goal any lower would be unfair." Oakville received solid efforts from Josh Ruys (two goals), Dylan Gilbert (two goals, one assist), and Spencer Gallant (three assists) to best the Tomahawks 6-3 at the Clarkson Community Centre. Brown expects veterans like Ruys and Gilbert to lead the offensive attack this season. "Josh just needs to continue the year that he had last year. We're trying to develop him into a double threat," said Brown. "Dylan has the ability to be a top guy on this team. You're going to see a big year from him." Defensive upgrades made in the off-season should alleviate some of the pressure from star goaltender Cam Watts. "Cammie is one of the best goalies in the league in my opinion. He's going to be a big part of our success this year," said Brown. The Buzz will look to build momentum in their home opener Friday at 8 p.m. against conference rivals, the Mimico Mountaineers, at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. Toronto Rock captain Jim Veltman will be on hand to conduct a ceremonial opening faceoff. Also, the Buzz will be honouring Bill McNair, a founding member of the Oakville lacrosse system and a fixture at Buzz home games, who passed away this winter.
