Braille stamp unveiled By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The four-legged helpers who make life so much easier for Canadians with disabilities received some welldeserved recognition on Thursday with the unveiling of Canada's first Braille postage stamp. The 52-cent Canada Post stamp, which was presented at a ceremony in the Oakville Place Shopping Centre, prominently features Lions Foundation of Canada Canine Vision Dog Guide Luke, a yellow Labrador retriever who is outfitted in his harness, looking alert and ready to lead his master. The stamp also features the 52-cent denomination written in Braille, a gesture by Canada Post to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Montreal Association of the Blind. "Adapting Braille to a stamp was certainly a challenge as the raised Braille finish has to travel between two pieces of paper and the glue in between," said Carla Ciallella, Director of West GTA Delivery and Retail Operations, Canada Post. As the stamp recognized dog guides there were many in attendance with more than a dozen black and yellow Labrador retrievers mingling with standard poodles and even puppies in training. The Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides (LFCDG) is a national charity that has been helping Canadians with medically and physically limiting disabilities since 1983 and during this time the group has provided specially trained dog guides to more than 1,200 men, women and children. The services these dogs provide are many and depend on the needs of their owner. Some of these dogs serve as eyes for the blind or visually impaired, others serve as ears for the deaf or hard of hearing, while others serve as hands for those whose disabilities limit their movement while still others are trained to get help in the event that their master has a seizure. "Canada Post's stamps are designed to celebrate and promote our country and our history, our heroes and the achievements and passion of our people," said Ciallella. "I am sure that we can all agree that the invaluable services provided by guide dogs are well worth being celebrated with this commemorative stamp." In a display of what these guide dogs can do, the task was left to a black Labrador retriever named Poppy to unveil the stamp, which he did by pulling away the cloth so that all could see an enlargement of the stamp that recognizes the deeds of him and his colleagues. "When I discovered that we were receiving this honour I truly cried and for those of you who know me well know I don't do that too easily," said Beverley Berger, LFCDG spokesperson. "To have an agency like Canada Post willing to share our dog guides with the country is very emotional for me." Berger also commended Canada Post for introducing Canada's first Braille stamp, which she said, demonstrates great inclusiveness. The Braille Dog Guides stamp can now be found at any post office location. National Volunteer Week is celebrated each year and during this special week we acknowledge our appreciation of the volunteers who generously contribute their time and talents to support their community. She has put in countless hours volunteering at special events and fundraisers, community days and especially in Daisy's (her pride & joy) over the years. She is extremely dedicated to OPCC, respectful and supportive and always on the go! She cares and nurtures children with such a cheerful disposition.
