The result has been a massive postal subsidy of partisan advertising. I won't comment on the juvenile nature of the flyers themselves because we can't legislate against bad taste. But the feedback I've received from my constituents, primarily self-proclaimed Conservatives, has been disgust with the sleazy, misleading nature of these attacks ads. Their outrage increases when they discover these flyers have been sent illegally and at their expense. We now learn that Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty is under investigation for having issued a series of untendered government contracts to a friend in direct contravention of government procurement policy. One of these was a payment of $122,000 simply for help in drafting the 2008 budget speech. Unfortunately, a disturbing pattern emerges here. This is not a one-off event or a few low level "bad apples." This is a pervasive problem emanating from the top. Canadians deserve a government that is both honest and respectful of its responsibility as trustee of the public treasury. Mr. Harper is long on the rhetoric of clean and accountable government, but his actions speak louder than his words.
