30 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 30, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com BIG WINNER: Oakville Blades forward Nick McParland wears a sheepish grin on his face after receiving the MVP, top scorer and most sportsmanlike player awards at last week's Dudley Hewitt Cup tournament. McParland had 10 goals, one assist and zero penalty minutes in four games. DANIEL HO / SPECIAL TO THE OAKVILLE BEAVER McParland earns three individual awards Continued from page 28 for three months, he did just a terrific job. He looked like he'd been playing all year long." Wren stopped 21 of 23 shots he faced in his first game, a 5-2 win Thursday over Newmarket to earn the Blades a bye to the final. He was also sharp in the championship game, making 26 saves. Wren wasn't the Blades' only hero at the tournament, however. Forward Nick McParland skated away with the tournament's MVP, leading scorer and most sportsmanlike player awards, finishing the competition with 10 goals and one assist in four games. "It's a little embarrassing," McParland said of the three awards, "but I'm definitely not disappointed. My linemates played amazing, and the (defencemen) were amazing too. It's really easy to play offence when your (defencemen) are so good at getting the puck out." McParland scored twice Saturday, including the clinching empty-netter with 10 seconds left. Dustin Alcock also had a pair of goals, both coming in the opening eight minutes to stake the Blades to an early 2-0 lead, and was named Oakville's player of the game. Defencemen Scott Judson and Braden Birch contributed singles for Oakville, which roared out to a INSTALLED HOME IMPROVEMENTS FREE airfare to California! Newmarket rallied for two second-period goals to pull within 5-3, but Oakville shut down the Hurricanes in the final frame. Saturday's game marked the first time in the playoffs that Oakville faced potential elimination. The Blades didn't lose any more than two games in a series during their run to the Provincial Junior A Hockey League playoff title. "It felt weird," said forward Jeremy Welsh, who had a goal and three assists in the tournament. "It felt different leaving my house (Saturday). I told myself I'd come back either high as a kite or depressed, but we came out hard." Defenceman Chris Haltigin added, "I went through it before the game, and we had nine to 12 guys that could have had their junior A careers end (Saturday). We didn't want that to happen." Now the Blades will look to prolong their season as much as possible at the Royal Bank Cup. "I'm already prepared for this. We'll refocus, go back to our dayto-day routine and not change anything," said Coccimiglio. "This will be the experience of a lifetime for them, no matter what happens down there." Break boys win silver at OBA tourney The Oakville Vytis bantam boys' Break basketball team waited for the perfect time to come up with its best tournament effort of the season. The Break won four of its first five games to reach the Division 2 title game at last weekend's Ontario Basketball Association championships in North York. Oakville, the fifth-seeded team in Division 2, settled for silver after falling 48-41 to the Vaughan Panthers in the gold-medal game. The Break opened the tournament with a 20-point win over the Scarborough Hurricanes, then fell by 18 to CKaTT #2 in its second game. A 16-point rout of the Waterloo Wolverines completed Oakville's round-robin schedule. After dumping the Burlington Panthers 45-33 in the quarterfinals, the Break avenged its lopsided loss to CKaTT with a 56-53 victory in the semis. Members of the team are Christopher Lam, Dennis Xu, Jake Babic, Matthew Thompson, Max Lambert, Oliver Dooley, Owen Coulthard, Perry Billard, Rasheed Smith and Spencer Marion. Terry Coulthard and Rohan Thompson coach the squad.
