Novice Venom fourth at provincials Winning its first four games at the recent Ontario Basketball Association novice boys' championship tournament, the Oakville Venom finished fourth. Oakville defeated I.E.M. Newmarket 32-16, edged Chatham-Kent 28-27 and downed Niagara Falls 2723 in the preliminary round, finishing first in its pool. The Venom then trounced Waterloo 29-13 in the quarter-finals before its gold-medal hopes were dashed with a loss to the top-seeded Toronto Triple Threat. Members of the team, which drew praise from Basketball Ontario brass for its sportsmanship, are Maxime Grincourt, J.B. Cabrera, Akaash Viswanathan, Jacob Cerny, Diego Nunez, Jaiman Dhindsa, Chris Tani, Cullen Welesford, Matthew Manocchio, Elijah Lostracco, Keshaun Saunders and Stefan Rajacic. The Oakville Buzz -- particularly assistant captain Harry Hristopoulos -- is in need of repair before its next game, following Friday's 12-10 overtime loss to the Mimico Mountaineers. Hristopoulos -- who netted two goals and assisted on two more in the loss -- will need some dental work to fix holes in his smile, thanks to a cross check in the mouth that chipped his two front teeth. The 1-1 Buzz, on the other hand, will have to mend holes in its porous special teams. Friday, Mimico struck for four power play and two shorthanded goals, accounting for half of its offensive production. "We ran into penalty trouble early in the second and we can't keep yelling at the refs and getting more penalties. We've got to keep our composure," said Hristopoulos. "They (also) scored two shorthanded goals on us and that's kind of a killer." After an even first period, the Buzz jumped out to a 5-3 lead early in the second period on goals by Josh Ruys, Brendan Gamble and Hristopoulos. Oakville's Alex Kruse scored with 4:50 left in the period to extend the lead to 6-3. Shortly after Kruse's marker, the Buzz began its parade to the penalty box. Oakville received three consecutive penalties in the last five minutes of the period, the biggest being a fiveminute major and game misconduct assessed to Spencer Taugher after he pummeled a Mimico player that had thrown teammate Ruys over the net. Mimico capitalized, scoring two of its four power-play goals on a two-man advantage. Both teams traded goals to narrow the Oakville lead to 10-9 late in the third period. Mimico scored its fourth power-play goal of the game with 1:22 left, while Eric Crepinsek was in the penalty box serving a doubleminor penalty, to force overtime action. Mimico netted one goal early in the extra frame, and another with 41 seconds left to hand the Buzz its first loss of the year. Friday's game was the first at the new "Hive" (Glen Abbey Community Centre) for the Buzz this season. The home season began with a ceremonial opening face-off conducted by Toronto Rock captain Jim Veltman, who made his final National Lacrosse League appearance Sunday, retiring after 15 seasons in the league. Oakville will play road games against the Gloucester Griffins and Nepean Knights this weekend.
