Under the supervision of Nathan Kellar, 44 history students got the chance to spend four days in Boston, Massachusetts. To extend our knowledge of American history, we had walking tours and tour guides who showed us the city. At 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26, we boarded the coach bus and started our drive to Boston. Ten hours, three movies and two rest stops later we arrived at the Double Tree Hotel, in downtown Boston. We finished the night with a wonderful dinner at California Pizza Kitchen and a trip to the YMCA that was attached to our hotel. Thursday morning we were up bright and early for our walking tour of the Freedom Trail. Our tour guides, dressed entirely in colonial clothing, took us for a 2.5-mile tour of downtown Boston. Following the red line W ho said Blakelock students could never go to painted down the middle of the sidewalk, we saw Boston Common, Beacon Hill, Faneuil Hall, and Quincy Market. We also saw graves of famous Americans Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Mother Goose and Paul Revere. After the Freedom Trail tour we had lunch and spent a few hours exploring Quincy Market. There was everything from a Coach Outlet store to Boston chowder stands. Making our way back to our hotel, we walked down Washington Street, past the famous Omni Parker Hotel and many more places to spend our money. After a few hours rest we boarded the bus again to go for dinner. We ate at Planet Hollywood, which was not far from our after-dinner activity. Dressed in blue and white or in Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys we made our way from the restaurant to TD Bank Northgarden. We watched the hockey game and experienced the atmosphere of American sports venues. Friday we started off our day with a visit to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. A short, self-narrated film of JFK's life, from his childhood through his involvement with the navy, to the beginning of his 1960 election campaign, gave us the background information we needed to understand, to the best of our ability, the rest of the museum. The six-storey library and museum overlooked Boston Harbour, but we weren't about to throw our $5 Starbucks teas into the harbour as happened at the Boston Tea Party 235 years ago. From the JFK museum we made our way to Cambridge, where we had the chance to walk the Harvard Campus and the surrounding streets. Following a short break for lunch we arrived at the Museum of Natural History. During the self-guided tour we could see more than two million different animal specimens from all over the world. Before dinner we had a little down time at the hotel. We went for dinner at Rock Bottom Restaurant and afterwards walked across the street to Charles Playhouse. There we saw the worldrenowned comedy and music show preformed by The Blue Man Group. The astounding show was a fantastic way to end an amazing trip. Saturday bright and early we boarded the bus for the final time and started our drive back home. Mother is Beautiful. Join the fun, bring a friend and navigate your way along the course throughout the Halton from Lockwood, which is located at 175 Wyecroft Rd. The first car will leave at noon. Prizes will be awarded for teams who answer the most questions correctly. Questions are based on what you can observe looking out the car window as you follow the course instructions. To register, download the registration form from foodforlife.ca. Then ask your friends and colleagues to make pledges to Food for Life totalling $200. Bring the form and donations to the car rally registration desk at Lockwood Chrysler. Food for Life is a non-profit registered charity that collects perishable food from local grocery stores and restaurants and distributes them to Halton families in need and other charitable agencies who require assistance in meeting food needs. Food for Life makes local pick-ups and deliveries seven days a week. All money raised will used to support Food for Life, which is supported by the United Ways in Oakville, Burlington and Milton.
