26 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 2, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Volunteering with kids at the Y is a win-win job T he following letter was written by St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School Student and YMCA of Oakville volunteer, Andrew Nyhuis, who helped out at the Y from October 2007 to January 2008. Until May 3 we celebrate National Volunteer Week. The YMCA of Oakville is a charitable association, and we would like to thank the 496 volunteers who help us to help others. Dear Ms. Smith: I'd like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to help young children build their self esteem. I've been able to see their success with improvements in such areas as reading, writing and verbal communication. I really enjoyed working with my fellow young friends from the preschool program all semester long. In fact, the time I have spent at the Y has made me consider a career working with children. It was great to get a chance to work with every employee in the preschool program, especially Donna, and it was fun to help her SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER HELPING OUT: Oakville YMCA volunteer Andrew Nyhuis is a teen who gives his time to the Y and the youths it serves like Hannah DeSouza. run the morning circle. We taught the kids how many months are in a year and how many days are in a week and so much more. The kids have taught me so many new and interesting facts -- they each are such interesting individuals with their different types of personalities. The skills that I acquired were leadership, social skills, self-initiative. I learned how to solve problems, develop crafts for the children, and communicate with others. I will definitely use these skills to my full advantage in the future in every day activities. This was an awesome experience, especially getting the chance to act like a kid and have fun. It's more than fun if it is one of your interests. I will take this fun co-op experience and new skills with me and I will treasure it forever. Sincerely, Andrew Nyhuis The YMCA of Oakville is a charitable association open to all, dedicated to providing life-long opportunities for health enhancement and personal growth.
