In 1995, she was appointed theatre critic, during which time she won two Nathan Cohen Awards and a National Newspaper Award for her reviews. Taylor's success continues and, as a writer, her critically acclaimed novel Madame Proust and the Kosher Kitchen won the City of Toronto Book Award and earned the title of Best First Novel in Canada and the Caribbean. "We are thrilled that Kate will be discussing her novel with our audience. Madame Proust and the Kosher Kitchen is a very popular choice within our collections and I know that our customers will enjoy meeting this well-known author," said Lori Sims, CEO of Oakville Public Library who welcomes the highly-respected writer to Oakville. The event, in partnership with Oakville Galleries will complement the exhibit What We Bring to the Table currently on show at Gairloch Gardens, which explores the mnemonic power of food in everyday family life. Through reading and exploring her novel Madame Proust and the Kosher Kitchen, Taylor will discuss the artistic power of mealtimes both in her own writings and in the exhibit featured at Gairloch Gardens. In the novel, Taylor uses cooking as a metaphor for cultural identity and the table as the arena of family relations. Sims believes these crossover events with Oakville Galleries offer the residents of Oakville a great range of perspectives. "To have a partnership with Oakville Galleries and to have our collections and resources linked with the What we bring to the Table show at Gairloch Gardens is a fantastic way of developing the relationship among the arts and the Oakville community," she said. Oakville Public Library and Oakville Galleries invite you to come and experience this unique event and take part in Kate Taylor's intimate discussion on Tuesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium, Oakville Public Library, Central Branch, 120 Navy St. A light snack and refreshments will be provided.
