Brantwood School, located at 221 Allan St. and Linbrook School, which is at 1079 Linbrook Rd., were added to the Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value and Interest (Not Designated) under the Ontario Heritage Act following a unanimous decision by the planning and development council Monday night. The placement of these schools on this register means that the property owner is required to give 60 days notice to remove the building or structure from the property. The 60-day waiting period allows the municipality to consider making the building a designated heritage property under the Ontario Heritage Act. "It provides some level of protection," said Charlie McConnell, manager of current planning and urban design with the Town of Oakville. "It is not to stop the landowner from applying for a demolition permit, but it means there is a 60-day waiting period for a demolition permit to be issued, allowing council the opportunity to examine the heritage attributes of that property to determine if there is merit. If there is merit, then they could move forward to actually issue a notice an issue of intent to designate and if not, then they can take it off the list." McConnell said it is up to council whether to designate the buildings with official heritage status under the Ontario Heritage Act. However, the recommendation for a building to be considered for heritage designation can come from any source. "It could remain in this status (on the non-designated register) for some time if the owner is willing to live with the status, but the next step under the Heritage Act would be for council or heritage staff to do that additional research and make a recommendation to either proceed with designation or not. Other groups can push for that, as can the heritage committee or heritage staff, so it could come from anybody." The two schools have storied pasts, with the original building at Linbrook School erected in 1932 and the main school building at Brantwood School constructed in the 1920s. Linbrook School currently serves as an elementary French immersion school, with a student population of about 385. Brantwood School is a regular track elementary school with approximately 130 students. The school has been recommended for closure. Public school board trustees will determine the fate of the school on June 18. Before making their decision Monday night, councillors heard a presentation from Dan Chalykoff, a heritage consultant and heritage buildings specialist, who said he has a special interest in preserving the buildings, particularly Linbrook School. Three generations of his family have attended the educational institution. "They function as schools, meeting places and soccer fields where we bring our children," Chalykoff said. "In a community that is under radical transformation... these are some of the buildings that define what these neighbourhoods have been and what they are about."
