www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 21, 2008 - 11 Improve literacy with used books There's no doubt it's a booklover's dream, but grabbing bargains at the Oakville Literacy Council's Used Book Sale at Hopedale Mall this week will also help some local adults improve their literacy. The sale starts tomorrow at Hopedale Mall, and runs through Saturday, May 24. You can shop on Thursday and Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. and Saturday between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. "The quantity, quality, and selection are amazing," said Bernie Martenson, the Council's president. "You'll have no problem filling a bag or two with some great deals." All of the gently-used books are donated to the Council, and the sale is organized and staffed by volunteers. This means that just about every dollar raised goes directly to the non-profit agency, which provides free, one-on-one tutoring for local adults who need help with their reading, writing, or math skills. Linda North, a volunteer tutor and member of the committee running the book sale, says the book sale is important. "Not only does the sale provide much needed funds for the Oakville Literacy Council, it also gives us a chance to get our adult students involved in the community in a new way," she said. North's student, Yelitza Rincón, accepted that invitation to get involved and give back. "I want to make some contribution to the community, and I wish to feel the satisfaction coming from volunteer work," she said. "In this way, I can return a bit of the time and effort that the program is giving me." At last year's sale, more than $10,000 worth of books was sold. The sale is the Council's largest fundraiser of the year. To learn more about the Oakville Literacy Council and the Used Book Sale, visit www.oakvilleliteracy.ca or call 905 469-8528.
