www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 21, 2008 - 7 Students honoured twice for bravery The Halton Regional Police Service honoured a pair of Oakville youths Wednesday night for brave actions in coming to the aid of a fellow student. On July 12, 2007 Michael Gural and Mathew Tabar were attending math class at Iroquois Ridge Secondary School when two other students began to argue. As the argument escalated, one of the students pulled a twopronged barbecue fork out of his gym bag and began to stab the other student. Police said the attacker had managed to stab his victim three times when Gural and Tabar took action and jumped the outof-control youth, disarming him. The pair then took the injured student out of the classroom to get help while a teacher held the attacker for police. For these actions, the duo was invited to attend the Halton Regional Police Service's Annual Awards ceremony where they were awarded the Chief's Commendation for Meritorious Efforts. "Gentlemen if not for your heroic effort the results of this incident could have been much more serious or possibly fatal for the victim," said Sgt. AWARD: Michael Gural and Matthew Tabar receive their Respect for Law Awards from the Optimist Club of Oakville. cer, during the ceremony. " As I'm sure you are aware, the individual who was stabbed suffered non-life threatening injuries, in large part, because of your quick reaction to a serious incident." The Chief's Commendation was the second award received by Gural and Tabar this week with the Optimist Club of Oakville recognizing the boys for their heroic work with the Respect for Law Award on Monday. "All too often teenagers receive negative attention in the community. The actions of Mathew and Michael provide some reassurance in knowing that there are young people in the community who are willing to stand up and act when needed," read a statement from the club. "Their actions speak highly of the type of character they possess and are a positive reflection on today's youth."
