16 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 23, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com New Central celebrates liberation of Dutch By Saskia Becs-D'Souza, Grade 7; Ben Kemp, Grade 8, J.D. Smela, Grade 6 NEW CENTRAL PUBLIC SCHOOL O n Monday May 5th at New Central Public School, three posters were presented to our school. The posters represent how important Canadian veterans were in the Second World War. Our school band played O Canada and the choir sang. Hearing the Canadian anthem helped us realize how much the veterans helped Canada and what a struggle it was to serve for the Canadian army during the war. However, these veterans did not regret their choice during these difficult times. They were very proud of being part of the Canadian Army. There were a few Canadian veterans at our assembly. They wore their full uniforms and showed off their shiny and important medals and badges. We felt that this represented how important this day was. The Dutch people will remember Dutch Liberation Day for generations to come. Mr. Arnold Manders, a Canadian of Dutch heritage and Mr. Archie Izatt, a Canadian Second World War veteran created the posters. Having Mr. Manders and Mr. Izatt speak was an honor. Not every school gets the opportunity to receive these special posters. It helped us realize how important these individuals are and just how the Dutch are grateful to Canada for helping their $ .99 3 1/2 Price Save $5 $ 9 .98 $ 29.99 $ .99 4 The Power you want. It was great that we got so much publicity and it was a great choice that our school could be recognized for more than just being a small school. We are proud to be one of the first schools in Canada to receive these posters. There were many important people there such as the mayor, councillors and veterans. As students, we think it is important for us to understand the meaning of Dutch Liberation Day and how significant it was because we are so removed from the event itself. This presentation was very informative as we learned a lot from it and we finally got to understand the meaning of Dutch Liberation Day. We were all very quiet during the presentation. While the veterans, the mayor and the council members were speaking, New Central students listened respectfully. You could tell that the event captured the attention of all students as their eyes were on the speakers the entire time. These posters are important to Mr. Manders and Mr. Izatt. They would like our generation to recognize and remember the struggle and hard work that was put into helping the Dutch by the Canadian soldiers. Mr. Manders and Mr. Izatt hope that one day these three posters will be displayed in every school in Canada. Seeing the posters everyday as we walk by our school office has inspired several of us to try and find out more about the help Canadian soldiers gave to the Dutch people during the war.
