www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 23, 2008 - 17 Halton Pride Picnic set for June 7 By Dennis Smith SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The old song Life is a Carnival will certainly ring true at the upcoming Halton Pride Picnic. There'll be a carnival atmosphere at this year's event, slated for Saturday, June 7 at the Central Park bandshell. It will run from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The ninth annual picnic celebrates the lives and contributions of Halton's gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, intersex and two-spirit communities, their children, friends, families, faith communities and allies. A spokesperson for Halton Organization for Pride and Education (HOPE) said entertainment is still being finalized for the picnic. "We're still trying to solidify the entertainment," said Marcus Logan, executive director of HOPE. "There will be a carnival theme with carnival games at the booths, as well as clowns and jugglers and buskers. We're putting a fun spin on it." In addition to the booths featuring HOPE's partner and advisory members, the event will include music, craft and community displays and a children's play and craft area. There'll also be a marketplace section and a barbecue hosted by Halton police. Logan said the attitude toward the picnic is shifting from acceptance to participation and support from community groups. "There's more of an acceptance happening as we educate throughout the community," he said. "This is a chance for the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer communities) to be together in a safe place, but it's for all ages and all communities. It's open to all faiths and cultures. "People are recognizing that sexual orientation and identity intersect with diversity issues," he noted. Educational programs like positive space training are helping agencies be more inclusive of diversity at their workplaces, said Logan. He hopes that moving the picnic from Bronte Creek Provincial Park to the Central Park bandshell will improve attendance, particularly by youths. There's no admission fee at the new location and it is on a bus route. The location also enables visitors to view nearby Central Library's Rainbow Project, which provides LGBTQ materials for children, teenagers and their families. To coincide with the picnic, HOPE will ask Halton Region and its municipalities (Burlington, Halton Hills, Oakville and Milton) to fly the rainbow pride flag from June 2-7. HOPE is organizing the Halton Pride Picnic with the Social Networking and Pride (SNAP) subcommittee. It has also received financial support from the Burlington Community Foundation and the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario, Halton branch. Picnic organizers will be holding a volunteer orientation night on Thursday, May 29 from 7-8 p.m. at Burlington Central Library at the HOPE display in the library lobby. Volunteers are needed to help with setup, vendor coordination, decorating, the children's area, face painting, welcoming attendees and cleaning up. Those helping can earn communi- ty volunteer hours for school. The picnic will take place rain or shine and there is still space for vendor booths, which cost $20 per day.
