www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 23, 2008 - 21 St. Mildred's hosts soccer tourney for Special Olympians In support of Special Olympics Ontario, the St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School (SMLS) is hosting the HomeTown Games for the fourth consecutive year. This opportunity allows organizations to participate in planning and hosting a sport competition for Special Olympic athletes across Ontario. The HomeTown Games feature eight squads of special Olympian athletes playing round robin soccer tournaments in Levels C, & D. Children from age 4-14 in the back field participating in a skills and drills mini tournament The entire Oakville Community is welcome to cheer on the HomeTown Games athletes. More than 80 student and 20 parent volunteers and staff will be on hand to run the day's events, including the raffle and bake sale, with all proceeds going to Special Olympics Ontario. St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School's involvement with Special Olympics started four years ago as part of SMLS's Careers Course and the Toskan Casale Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) project. This program provides high school students with a reality experience through a schoolbased, community-focused philanthropy program. Since its launch, the program has enabled young philanthropists across Canada to donate almost $1,000,000. In 2004, the winning SMLS charity was Special Olympics Ontario, and the $5,000 that was awarded to this charity was given back to SMLS as start-up funds to run the HomeTown Games. Since then, this has become a popular and much anticipated annual event at St. Mildred's.
