HEAVE HO: Holy Trinity's Kristopher Tavella puts everything he's got into his shot put attempt at this week's Halton/Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference track-and-field championships in Hamilton. Tavella won the junior boys' division and will represent the Titans at next week's South Regional meet. Mathie wins sprint, distance titles One of many multi-event winners at GHAC track and field By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR 2000 Appleby Line (Millcroft Shopping Centre) Burlington 2379 Trafalgar Road (Winners Plaza) Trafalgar Ridge Plaza, Oakville 905-315-7800 905-257-5006 Daniel Mathie already knew he was a pretty fast long-distance runner. It turns out he's not so bad in the shorter distances, either. Mathie won the midget boys' 400-, 1,500and 3,000-metre events at this week's Halton/Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) track-and-field championships in Hamilton, becoming one of many locals to qualify for next week's South Regional meet. "He probably would have won the (800m) race as well, but he's only allowed three events. He's an outstandingly gifted runner. It's a matter of trying to direct him into which events will be the most promising for him," said Abbey Park coach Bryan Camani. "It's been an experimental year, trying to see where his most potential lies. We wanted to know what his 400m speed was -- we had no idea whether he'd win it or not." According to Camani, Mathie -- who finished sixth at the provincial cross-country championships this past fall -- should contend for gold at next month's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) meet, to be held in Hamilton. So too should Eagles teammate Michael Rose, a second-year senior with plenty of OFSAA experience already under his belt. Rose won the senior boys' 200m and 400m races, and is part of Abbey Park's strong 4x400m relay team that won its event at GHAC. Michael Trnkus, Kevin Cox and Brandon Musselman round out the foursome. Camani said the team is capable of matching or beating any times that other relay teams in the province have posted this year, but a lot is dependent on the health of Cox, who is nursing a strained hamstring. w w w. t h e s u n d a n c e s p a s t o r e . c o m GOLF+DINE Tuesday Friday Also enjoying a fine meet for Abbey Park was Sam McVean, who won the junior girls' shot put and discus while placing fourth in javelin. St. Thomas Aquinas boasts a pair of multievent champions as well. Colleen Hennessy easily won the junior girls' 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m races, with Miana Griffiths -- a silver medalist at last year's OFSAA meet -- finishing first in the senior girls' 100m and 200m sprints. Chantelle Robbertse of King's Christian Collegiate was the other local athlete to win two events, striking gold in the junior girls' 400m and high jump. Other event winners were KCC's Erin Queenan (midget girls' 800m); White Oaks' Mira Krunic (midget girls' high jump), Andrew Filler (junior boys' javelin) and Sarah Mooney (senior girls' high jump); Loyola's Ashara Cadogan (junior girls' 200m), Alicia Knox (senior girls' 3,000m), Kacy Gray (senior girls' long jump) and Paulina Maher (open girls' 1,500m steeplechase); Abbey Park's Corinne Smith (senior girls' 400m) and Jessica Tat (senior girls' 400m hurdles); Aquinas' Nelson Mendez (midget boys' high jump) and Eric Fram (senior boys' high jump); Blakelock's Lucas Jacques (junior boys' long jump) and Jordan Doherty (boys' 100m ambulatory); and Holy Trinity's Brandon Clarke (junior boys' triple jump), Kristopher Tavella (junior boys' shot put) and Justin Di Carlo (senior boys' javelin). Winning relay titles were Loyola (senior girls' 4x100m) and Abbey Park (open girls' 4x400m). Top-five finishers in each event qualified for regionals. Top-four finishers at regionals will advance to the OFSAA championships. · Results, page 51
