20 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 24, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Team of bankers run for your money in Relay for Life There were 12 years between Sharon Sandercock's first and second cancer diagnosis. Today she's cancer free, but believes without the advancements in cancer detection equipment, she may have not lived. Like Sandercock, Michelle MacMahon is also a cancer survivor. But there is something stronger than cancer that bonds them and seven other TD Canada Trust employees from the Oakville downtown branch: their desire to beat the disease. MacMahon and the team have participated in the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life for seven years. Most of the team members, including MacMahon and Sandercock, have been in all seven relays. "You have to raise money and do the relay for support," said MacMahon, near tears. "People are dying and you don't want that to happen. For our children, our children's children, our friends, our customers. Support is huge at times like this. At least it was for me." The team is grateful for the support it received from the branch manager, family and customers. everywhere, and that everyone is affected by it," she said. Haddon's mother was diagnosed with cancer. She died at age 51. Aside from customer donations, the team will hold several fundraising events to raise money -- a bake sale at the branch yesterday, and on May 30, a barbecue at Timothy's patio. "The people at Timothy's were kind enough to give us their patio that day," said team member Donna Newman. "It's things like this that keep us going." The team's fundraising events begin early in the year. "We fundraise all year long, with our dress down days," said Newman. "So we wear jeans and everyone pays $2." Throughout the year, Sandercock sells treats in the branch's lunchroom, and Carol Christouh, another team member, sells bracelets. "We buy the beads for the bracelets together," said MacMahon, "But Carol is really the one who makes them. I probably make like 20 and she makes 200," she said. Last year, they were one of the run's dream teams, because of the amount of money they raised. In total, the team has raised more than $32,100 for the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit. Although MacMahon is always asked how much she aims to raise this year, she admits she's doesn't have a goal. "People always ask about that (goal), I don't have one. All I know is that I just want to get as much as I can," she said. "But now that we're up there we want to stay up there," laughed Sandercock. This year, the team will be running under the same banner they've run under for the past seven years -- We run for your money. Relay for Life will take place June 6 at Appleby College.
