10 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 28, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Local firm turns chemical waste into profit By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF An Oakville-based company has developed a revolutionary new technology that has the potential to reduce industrial emissions not only in North America, but all over the world. Petro Sep Membrane Technologies unveiled `membrane-aided recycling,' on Friday, during a press conference at its Speers Road headquarters. The new technology essentially treats chemical waste, making it reusable. Most industrial chemical waste is currently disposed of in landfills or through incineration. "Most scientists would agree that even the most technologically advanced incinerators contribute negatively to air pollution and could very well be a health hazard," said Isaac J. Gaon, CEO of KmX, which is working to incorporate Petro Sep's membraneaided recycling into KmX recycling plants. By honoring exceptional leaders, the ATHENA Award Program seeks to inspire others to achieve excellence. ATHENAs O a k v i l l e Awa r d "These units will be capable of separating those elements making up the waste streams and take each element to purities of 99.5 per cent and higher if necessary by differentiating between molecules. No other technology is capable of reaching these levels of purity on such a wide spectrum of different chemicals." In describing the process, Petro Sep President and CEO Fakhir Baig said the customer's chemical waste is placed in a machine where it goes through a specially made membrane. As the waste travels through the membrane, the impurities are removed leaving behind the pure chemical, which is then reused by the customer. The impurities removed by this process are then used as fuel for the machine itself. While providing an alternative to chemical waste dumping or incineration is good for the environment, Gaon said the technology is also good for business. To illustrate this point, Gaon brought forth the example of a large European pharmaceutical company, which approached KmX for help in its efforts to reduce its toxic waste output. Each day, from just one of four plants the company owned, six truckloads of a mixture of water, chemicals and ethanol would be sent DAVID LEA / OAKVILLE BEAVER GOOD NEWS: Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, left, and KmX Corporation CEO Isaac J. Gaon announce a new technology, engineered by the Oakville-based company Petro Sep, that will recycle industrial chemicals. The technology will soon be introduced to various KmX recycling plants. for incineration and landfill. "We showed this company how, with the aid of pervaporation membranes, it could separate the valuable ethanol from its waste mixture and purify the ethanol to fuel grade making it very valuable. In addition we were able to remove the toxic chemicals from the water, so the water within the mixture could be disposed of normally," said Gaon. "By adopting our solution, the company will now be able to reduce its waste disposal volume from six truckloads a day to one truckload a week. And through the sale of the fuelgrade ethanol and reduction of disposal costs, this company will convert a $20,000 daily disposal cost into a daily recurring income stream of approximately $25,000 -- a swing of some $45,000 every day that will go straight to its bottom line." Through Petro Sep's development of hollow fiber pervaporation membrane technology, the viability of chemical waste recycling has increased with the inexpensive, but resistant, polymer materials able to deal with all types of solvent waste mixtures. With the benefits this technology all too clear, Zeton Inc. is building the first ever commercial hollow fiber pervaporation facility in Burlington, which will be operated by KmX and feature this Petro Sep technology. Completion of the plant is scheduled for the end of the year at which point it is believed the facility will be able to process 30,000 litres of waste solution a day. The government of Ontario is contributing $1 million towards research into enhancing the Petro Sep membranes, a decision that will create 10 to 15 new jobs in Oakville. "We are very excited about this project and the people of Oakville are very proud that a technology developed right here is helping Ontario to be recognized as a world leader in clean technology," said Kevin Flynn, Oakville MPP. While demonstrating the technology on a commercial level is the next step in encouraging membrane aidedrecycling, Baig noted it is definitely not the last. "We are expanding globally," he said. "We already have one joint venture in China, we will be forming another joint venture in the Middle East very soon."
