Town honours Blades for inspirational season By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Oakville Blades have always been a bit more than just a hockey team for Luke Moodie. He grew up watching the team. At one point, his godfather owned the team. His dad, Ken, coached the team for eight years in the `80s and `90s. And his brother Lane was the team's captain during Luke's rookie season. So it goes without saying that the Blades have always meant a lot to the Moodie family. What Luke didn't know was how much they meant to everyone else. "This year was awesome. It's my greatest accomplishment," Moodie said as he joined his teammates at a reception hosted by the Town of Oakville to honour the Central Canadian champions. "To have something like this, you realize what it means to the town. I'm really honoured to be a part of it." Mayor Rob Burton presented each player with a certificate to commemorate their championship season and, in turn, Blades' captain Chris Corbeil presented the mayor with a The Oakville Trafalgar girls' rugby team may not be a dynasty just yet. For now they'll have to settle for merely dominant team status. The Red Devils regained the Halton championship with a one-sided 54-0 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Monday afternoon in Burlington. The triumph was OT's sixth in nine years but coach Dan Valley said there's one missing ingredient to achieving the dynasty tag. "I think they have to put a string together," said Valley, a former member of the OT boys' squad that will go for its 38th Halton championship in 39 years today. "They're not there yet but all the building blocks are here." Since winning three straight titles from 2000-2002, the Red Devils have won in alternating years. And it was last season's loss to Robert Bateman in the title game that was weighing on the minds of players as they took to the field. "We wanted it so bad," said co-captain Elizabeth Philip. "We have so many Grade 12s on our team so it was our last chance." And their best chance in their last chance was to make a good first impression. Valley and fellow coaches Jacquie BalePece and Adrian Lui had told their team that the first five minutes were crucial. "It sets the tone for the whole game," said co-captain Katerine Ferron. It certainly did. OT struck for a try in the first minute, added another a few minutes later and the rout was on. Up 34-0 at the half, OT made full-scale changes but hardly missed a beat. Despite playing against the wind in the second half, they added three more tries before sending out a third unit of Grade 10 players, which scored one more.
