12 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 31, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Councillor agrees to stay away from accuser Continued from page 7 Brian Carr, Halton police spokesperson. Khan said the peace bond was accepted and charges were withdrawn "on the understanding that it was done without any admission of guilt and without any admission of wrongdoing." The disposition of the case occurred last month at a judicial pre-trial at which time the court evaluates each case. The disposition of the case did not become publicly known until this week. Even if Khan had been convicted, it would not have hampered his ability to represent Ward 6 as its local Town councillor, according to the Ontario Municipal Act. At the time he was charged, Khan said the charges against him were without merit. Khan said the incident has had little negative impact on his professional life. Khan is a lawyer who works in Toronto and is a Town councillor serving his first term on Oakville Town council. The incident dates back to Sunday, June 10 of last year when Halton Regional Police were called to a Pilgrim's Way home at 11 a.m. to resolve a dispute between Khan and a 26year-old male in the basement apartment of Khan's parents' home -- where Khan and his wife also resided. After apparently resolving the immediate issues in the dispute, police departed only to be called back less than two hours later by the man who called 911 and alleged Khan had shoved him on two occasions. After an investigation, police arrested Khan and charged him with two counts of assault. The man was not injured in the incident and Khan was set free to appear in court at a later date. There were no bail conditions. Khan said he's relieved to put the episode behind him and regrets it took so long. As a lawyer, he said he understands that the legal process can be lengthy. That same legal process saw a month pass after the incident, before the man who had accused Khan was eventually evicted from the Khans' home by order of the Landlord Tenant Board. Khan, who said he owns numerous properties and is familiar with the Landlord Tenant Board, said he should have better scrutinized his tenant. Shortly after the incident last year involving Khan, his accuser, 26year-old Delaney Street, was charged in connection of a massive street crime ring. He, along with 19 others, faced a total of 64 theftrelated charges from more than 200 thefts with estimated losses of more than $100,000. Think Green. Breathe Easy.
