www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 31, 2008 - 23 Whirlwind month brings much success Knobbs wins solo, duet at senior nationals, lands spot on Canadian team By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Between competing in the pool and flying between competitions, Jennifer Knobbs has barely had her feet on the ground lately. Even when she's been earthbound, given the results she's achieved, she has to feel as though she's been floating. The Oakville synchronized swimmer's hectic month began with a trip to Tokyo to represent Canada at the Japan Open where she won a silver medal in the solo event and teamed up with Erin Wilson of Toronto for another silver in the duet. The day after the competition was over, she was on a plane, flying across 13 time zones to land in Toronto. Fifteen hours later she boarded another plane to compete at the Canadian National Synchro Championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Shrugging off the effects of jet lag, Knobbs and Wilson won the senior duet while Knobbs also took the gold in solo event. The competition was immediately followed by national team trials where Knobbs landed herself a spot on the Canadian national B team, which meant, naturally, more travel. "It's very tiring but you find a way to push through it," Knobbs said from Calgary, where's she's attending a national team training camp. Though she had represented Canada in international "It's been very competition tiring but you before, actualfind a way to ly being push through it." named to the national team Synchro swimmer was a dream Jennifer Knobbs come true for Knobbs, who turned 19 just five days after winning the Canadian title. "It was always a goal in the back of my mind and it feels great to have accomplished it," she said. Heading over to Tokyo, Knobbs had no idea what to expect in terms of competition but saw it as a great opportunity to get some exposure on the international scene as well as prepare for nationals. It served both purposes very well. Knobbs earned a score of 88.500 to fin- ish second to Japan's Saho Harada (96.334). In the duet event, Knobbs and Wilson's score of 89.084 trailed only Harada and Emiko Suzuki, who will represent Japan in this summer's Olympics. The bronze medalists from Kazakhstan will also be going to Beijing. Just nine days after receiving her medals in Japan, Knobbs was on the podium again. She and Wilson scored an 88.417 to edge Montreal's Genevieve Belanger and Karine Thomas, who had a score of 87.167. The three-time provincial champion at the junior level said her move the Granite Synchro Club last September has lifted her performance to a new level. Training under Sheilagh Croxon, who has twice coached Canada at the Olympics, Knobbs said her technical abilities have improved. "She's an amazing coach," she said. "They've been very minute changes but they're the things you need to get higher marks." It's also where she teamed up with Wilson, who is also a Granite Synchro Club member and now her teammate on the Canadian squad.
