It doesn't matter where you go, it seems that everyone lately is doing something to "go green" and, if you ask Bob Langerak, that's precisely why he saw the need for his new business. "Nobody out this way was using this product and, after being in the field of environmental engineering for 23 years, I knew I wanted a change but that I wanted to stay in the environmental field," said Langerak. Let's Go Green is the first Halton business to offer water based acrylic sealant for driveways. With the same results as typical sealers, but with a flat black appearance, Langerak's driveways will not track into your home and contain absolutely no solvents or harsh chemicals. He was recently happy to help a local resident whose son suffers from leukemia and cannot be exposed to solvents. She saw Langerak driving through her neighbourhood and flagged him down to seal her driveway. "I think it's great that we were able to provide that service for her," said Langerak. The days of postage stamp sized decks are long gone, and the growing outdoor living lifestyle has pushed deck sizes beyond the limits of traditional awnings. A local company has identified the need for bigger 'retractable' shade structures with the ability to resist wind and rain, and has set about manufacturing their new product, called ShadeFXTM, in Millcroft Ontario. ShadeFX Canopies Inc. is a new partnership between Herman Jans, owner of Jans Aluminum in Burlington, Peter Westgarth, the inventor from Guelph, and Steve Ostrowski, the business builder from Toronto that put the enterprise together after seeing the product by chance on Peter's deck last March. "Peter had successful inventions before, and he approached one of my suppliers with an idea that was not up their alley. They suggested I contact Peter to see what I could make of it" says Ostrowski, reminiscing on one of a few days that changed his life. "I gave him a call and dropped by to see what he had which actually was not the shade product. I told Peter the idea was great but not consistent enough with my other business to be of interest. He said "Okay, let's have a coffee on the deck..." The rest is history still in the making. Ostrowski had to make a smaller deck than he wanted years ago because awnings would only extend 10 or 12 feet from the house wall. He immediately noticed he was under an awning that was much longer. The product was in no way consistent with Ostrowski's other business, however that didn't matter when he did his market analysis and concluded this was a real winner of a new business opportunity. The team at Let's Go Green will begin the process by prepping each driveway using a professional trimmer and then a blower ­ for really tough jobs, they will use a power washer. Once cleaned, the sealer is applied and as Langerak says, the edges are the key to a longlasting quality and a professional appearance. While Langerak recommends waiting 24 hours, he says that even if it rains after one hour, the driveway will still dry as it should.
