I have Forest Elephant friends, but never met an Asian elephant. I eat mostly grasses with leaves and twigs as my herd travels far and wide across southern Africa. And, I am really, really excited about my new friends in Ontario, Canada. My herd includes 15 elephants, including my two sisters, baby brother, aunt, and 70-year old grandmother. I am sad to say my mom was killed by poachers for her ivory tusks three years ago. Poachers kill elephants like AIDS kills human beings: in both cases deaths occur that can be prevented. Not all humans obey anti-poaching laws, just as not all humans take precautions to prevent AIDS. Once there were millions of elephants in Africa, but now our population is under 700,000. The same thing is happening in Africa where 28 million humans are infected with AIDS and two million die every year, leaving 13 million orphans (the population of Ontario). Like most male elephants, my dad lives alone and away, like many human African fathers who move to other countries to find work. Basically, my sisters, brother and I are orphans, but not alone thanks to our aunt and grandmother. This is exactly like the AIDS epidemic in Africa, where orphan children whose parents are dead or absent are being raised by aunts and grandmothers. Over the next few months, I'll tell you more about me and my African elephant and human family, and about the $MOMO campaign. Last Thursday I went to Maple Grove Church, at 346 Maple Grove Road, just south of Cornwall, to celebrate the opening of the outdoor Zimbabwean Stone Sculpture exhibit. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from the sale of those beautiful shona stone sculptures will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, earmarked for grass roots projects in Zimbabwe. Led by artist Chaka Chikodzi, the Africville gallery also helps the rural Howard Hospital that cares for 200,000 patients each year on a budget of $40,000, including many AIDS patients. The amazing outdoor exhibit will be open every day until Saturday, June 21. You simply must go, and I hope you will also be able to contribute to $MOMO and the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
