Program director, Flavia Ceschin announced they will use the money from the three-year grant towards expanding peer support groups, increasing the volunteer base, creating a lending library of books about the grieving process, as well as conducting presentations and workshops. "It was just night and day getting a building to have our program in, and now we have a grant that's going to enable us to do so much more," said Jo de Lecq Marguerie, The Lighthouse Program's executive director. The program aims to offer bereaved children and their caregivers the hope and support that they may need to move past that stage of their lives. "When you put kids who are suffering from the same emotions you'd be surprised how well they communicate and help each other," said Ceschin. "Even the parents and caregivers get support from one another when they meet." Currently, the program meets Tuesdays and Wednesdays on a bi-weekly MENS SUMMER SALE Longhop R E G. 119.95 Dare R E G. 139.95 Half-tide R E G. 8 9.95 R E G. 119.95 Lambasa NOW Stafford R E G. 159.95 $ 59 99 $ 8999 R E G. 129.95 $ 9999 SALE STARTS JUNE 6TH ENDS JUNE 12TH NOW OPEN O A K V I L L E P L A C E 240 Leighland Ave. WWW.FREEDMANSHOES.COM Telephone: 905-842-3418 basis. Once there, the children are separated -- by age -- into two groups. "Children from pre-school to 12 years are in one group, and teens are in another. The parents also meet together," explained Ceschin. Volunteers and staff have divided the building into rooms that represent the moods that a child might experience during each stage of grief. For example, "When they feel angry, the children can go to the volcano room and let their anger out," said Ceschin. The volcano room is red and bordered with paintings of damaging ocean waves. In it, there are large exercise balls, and a boxing bag. Blue gymnastic mats cover the floor and red ones stand tall on the wall. "There's also the make-believe room. Most pre-school age children come here and play dress up, their favorite game is doctor," she added. "Going through all these measures (to help children overcome grief) validates what you're doing," said Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn. Flynn, along with Gilmar Militar, program manager of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and Grant Gooding, a volunteer with the foundation, congratulated the Lighthouse Program on its efforts. "Things don't get this far (grants of this amount given) unless they are pretty darn good," said Gooding. According to Militar, the grant is given to organizations that are both needed in, and able to provide to, the community. Furthermore, "we look to see whether the organization is getting support from the community," he said. The Lighthouse Program is getting support from Bernard Callebaut, GRD Graphics, as well as Oakview Funeral Home. The program was established in 1998, and was held at several locations including a church basement and seniors' residence's basement, before its current location in Oakville. The services it offers are free, however pledges are accepted. For more information, contact 905337-2333 or info@grievingchildrenlight-
