Choices 4 Health is the local arm of the OHHP project. In Halton, its success stems from the countless volunteers and partner organizations that quadruple the funding provided by the Ministry of Health Promotion through in-kind contributions of hours and resources. One such volunteer is Lynn Roblin, chair of Choices 4 Health. "Lynn's expertise and zeal for healthy living benefit our network immeasurably," says Tanya Rumble, Choices 4 Health co-ordinator. "The value of our partnership is defined by the sum of its members." ForestView church without walls Roblin grew up in Burlington and has lived in Oakville for the past 19 years. She exemplifies the healthy living that Choices 4 Health promotes. Roblin participates in many sports including cross-country skiing, long-distance running, cycling, and kayaking. She is raising an active family Roblin's four children are involved in tennis, fitness, and sailing. Roblin's husband cycles, plays hockey and is a masters sprinter. Roblin's passion for healthy eating and active living began while she was an undergraduate, studying applied human nutrition at the University of Guelph. Lynn went on to complete a Masters of Science in human kinetics. Her research focused on the eating habits, physical activity levels and body composition of women during pregnancy. Lynn later worked as a Public Health Nutritionist, was a volunteer fitness instructor with the YMCA and sat on several health and wellness committees. For the past 19 years, as a freelance nutrition consultant, Roblin has focused on helping Canadians eat better. Roblin worked with Health Canada on the development of Canada's Food Guide in 1992 and 2007. She consulted with Dietitians of Canada on the Ontario Lynn Roblin Ministry of Education policy to ban junk foods and pop in elementary schools and on the Healthy Foods in Schools Act (Bill 8). Roblin had a weekly nutrition column in the Toronto Star and has written many articles and resources for consumers and professionals. In addition, Roblin co-authored two cookbooks with Bev Callaghan, Dietitians of Canada's Great Food Fast and Suppertime Survival. On the Choices 4 Health Co-ordinating committee, Roblin represents the Halton Healthy Eating Network, a professional networking group of Registered Dietitians. Under Roblin's stewardship, the Healthy School Nutrition Environment workgroup was formed in 2004. With funding from Choices 4 Health, this group developed guidelines for schools to promote a healthy nutrition environment and provided funds to Halton elementary and secondary schools to implement healthy eating initiatives. "Funding from Choices 4 Health through the Ministry of Health Promotion allows us the opportunity to provide innovative programs in our community that help the people of Halton achieve optimum health through healthy eating, physical activity, good mental health and tobacco-free living," says Lynn. Her interest in working as chair on Choices 4 Health is to encourage more coordinated program planning and sharing with other partners such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association and others to ensure programs reach as many residents within Halton as possible. Choices 4 Health is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion, community partners and the Halton Region Health Department. The Choices 4 Health Network is a community coalition of more than 250 individuals and organizations working together to create a Halton in which people achieve optimum health by choosing opportunities for healthy eating, physical activity, good mental health and smoke-free living. -- Submitted by Choices 4 Health Bronte A Global research effort for type 2 diabetes begins with you.
